WeChat Pay is a payment feature built into Tencent's WeChat messenger, an ecosystem-style method where Chinese users' everyday communication and spending happen inside a single app. In Portugal it is a method aimed not at local residents but at Chinese visitors and residents, and it is especially meaningful for merchants looking to reach Chinese-speaking customers through WeChat as a channel.
For Chinese tourists visiting Portugal and the local Chinese-speaking community, WeChat is both a messenger and a wallet. Accepting WeChat Pay is not simply adding one more payment method — it differs from Alipay in that it can connect payment with marketing channels inside WeChat, such as official accounts and mini programs. That said, both methods share the same premise of targeting Chinese-speaking customers rather than local Portuguese consumers.
It suits travel and retail businesses that manage Chinese-speaking customers through a WeChat official account, and cross-border e-commerce sellers aiming for social-driven repeat purchases. If the goal is only one-off tourist sales, it's common to accept it alongside Alipay to broaden coverage.
When a consumer selects WeChat Pay during online checkout, they are taken to the WeChat app authentication screen, and payment is confirmed as soon as they approve it with a fingerprint or password. A web checkout uses QR code scanning, while mobile uses an app-invocation method. The consumer sees an amount denominated in yuan, but the merchant's transaction is settled in euros (EUR), with the exchange rate applied based on Tencent's published rate.
Through Hecto Financial, a Korean business can consider accepting WeChat Pay without a direct contract with Tencent. Given Chinese regulatory characteristics, there may be a review of the product categories handled, and the actual terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options) need to be confirmed through consultation.
※ This section describes the general integration process and does not guarantee that any specific merchant can actually integrate this method. Please consult with us to confirm the exact scope of support and applicable fees.
Confirm whether a contract is available for merchants registered in Korea
The integration approach and priority differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own store, open marketplaces, or a mobile app
Confirm in advance whether your category falls under the merchant policy restrictions of the WeChat Pay operator
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see the official sources below)
From the merchant's perspective, the flow of funds is as follows. The amount a WeChat user pays is collected by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR) and, after currency conversion, settled to the Korean merchant's account in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen in the contract. The yuan conversion and the exchange rate used for refunds, as with Alipay, follow the operator's published rate, so it is recommended to note the possibility of exchange rate fluctuation in the refund policy wording.
Hecto Financial's team can work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Portuguese market.
