Apple Pay is a tokenized card wallet approved with Face ID or Touch ID on iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac. It works by registering a card issued by a Portuguese bank onto the device, and we look at which customer segment to serve with this global wallet that coexists alongside the national app MB WAY.
If the local axis of online payments in Portugal is SIBS-family methods, the axis for iPhone users accustomed to global services and overseas sites is Apple Pay. Since it works by registering a card issued by a major Portuguese bank onto the device, there is no separate sign-up barrier, and because tokens are exchanged instead of the actual card number, it lowers security concerns around paying at overseas merchants.
It is effective for fashion, subscription, and digital content businesses where the purchase completes on mobile web or app, and for cross-border shops with high drop-off at the payment step. Since the local method (MB WAY) and the card wallet (Apple Pay) serve different user bases, it is more accurate to view them as complementary rather than as substitutes.
When a consumer selects Apple Pay at the payment button and approves it with Face ID or Touch ID, a device token is transmitted instead of the actual card number and is approved instantly through the card network. Because this biometric authentication satisfies the Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) required by PSD2, payment is often completed without an additional 3DS authentication screen, which reduces drop-off at the authentication step.
On top of Hecto Financial's card payment integration, you can also consider enabling the Apple Pay button and accepting token transactions. Supported browser/app environment requirements and actual terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options) need to be confirmed before signing a contract.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration availability for a specific merchant. Please confirm exact coverage and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is possible based on a domestic business registration
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned store, marketplace, or mobile app
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your products fall under restricted categories per Apple Pay's merchant policy
Confirmation is needed on compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Since Apple Pay itself is a secure container for card payments, settlement follows the underlying card transaction flow. Hecto Financial collects the approved euro (EUR) amount, converts it, and pays the domestic merchant in one of USD, KRW, or JPY as chosen at contract time. Refunds are processed as original-card cancellations, and since this is a card transaction, the chargeback response framework can be prepared the same way as for regular card payments.
The Hecto Financial team can help you review a payment method mix suited to the Portuguese market.
