Google Pay is a tokenized wallet that offers one-click payment on Android devices and in Chrome using cards saved to a Google account. Given the share of Android users in Portugal, it makes sense to approach this as a practical way to protect mobile conversion by removing the card-entry screen.
A major cause of payment abandonment in mobile commerce in Portugal is entering card details on a small screen. Google Pay removes this friction by pulling up a card saved to the customer's Google account and completing payment in one click, and it takes full advantage of the wide reach of Android devices and the Chrome browser. Because it works by registering a card issued by a Portuguese bank, it also connects naturally with the local card ecosystem.
This suits shops with a high share of mobile web traffic, app-based subscription and gaming services, and cross-border businesses that need to reduce friction at first payment. Since Apple Pay serves iPhone users and MB WAY serves demand for a direct link to a Portuguese bank account, dividing the roles among the three methods lets you complete coverage without redundant investment.
When a consumer taps the Google Pay button, they select a payment method from the list of cards saved to their account, and the transaction is approved instantly using tokenized card data along with device unlock confirmation (biometric or PIN). PSD2 Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) applies to EEA transactions, and only when device authentication fails to meet the requirement does it naturally proceed to additional 3DS2 authentication.
You can consider this as adding Google Pay button acceptance on top of Hecto Financial's card integration foundation. Implementation requirements for web and app environments and actual terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options) need to be confirmed through consultation before signing a contract.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration availability for a specific merchant. Please confirm exact coverage and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is possible based on a domestic business registration
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned store, marketplace, or mobile app
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your products fall under restricted categories per Google Pay's merchant policy
Confirmation is needed on compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
The starting point of settlement is card transaction approval. The approved euro (EUR) amount is collected by Hecto Financial, converted, and paid to the domestic merchant in whichever currency — USD, KRW, or JPY — was set at contract time. Refund and chargeback handling also follow the underlying card rules, so it can be managed within the same operational framework as regular card payments.
The Hecto Financial team can help you review a payment method mix suited to the Portuguese market.
