🇩🇪 Germany Trustly Payment Integration Guide

Trustly is an open banking payment PSP operated by Sweden's Trustly Group AB, letting consumers complete an account-to-account payment by simply logging into their online banking, with no separate sign-up required. This page covers a specific provider's solution, not open banking as a generic category.

When to consider Trustly payments in Germany

In Germany, where demand for account-based payments is strong, Trustly's advantage lies in its sign-up-free UX and merchant-facing features. Beyond simply initiating a transfer, it provides operational functions such as account verification, refund processing, and payouts at the PSP level, and it covers Europe broadly from a Nordic base.

It suits businesses with frequent refund and payout activity, such as those with two-way flows of funds, and merchants who want to use open banking payments while leaving the operational burden to a dedicated provider solution. For the concept of the method itself, see the Open Banking page.

Basic flow of Trustly payments in Germany

The consumer selects their bank on the payment screen and completes online banking authentication (SCA) through the Trustly interface, which initiates the transfer, and the merchant receives real-time payment confirmation. A key difference from generic transfers is that refunds and repayments can also be processed through Trustly's own features, using the same account information.

Hecto Financial's Trustly coverage

Trustly's bank coverage and industry acceptance policy in Germany can change over time, so please confirm with Hecto Financial in advance whether your target customers' primary banks are supported.

※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration availability for a specific merchant. Please confirm exact coverage and fees through consultation.

Things to check before applying and integrating

  • Business registration country

Confirm contract eligibility based on domestic business status

  • Sales channels

The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own store, open marketplaces, or mobile apps

  • Product categories handled

Advance confirmation is needed to check whether your business falls under Trustly's restricted-industry policy

  • EU regulatory compliance

Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see the official sources below)

Settlement currency, settlement cycle, and refund terms

Euros (EUR) transferred via Trustly are received by Hecto Financial, then converted and settled to the Korean merchant in one of three currencies -- USD, KRW, or JPY -- as specified in the contract.

Refunds are processed by re-transferring funds to the original account through Trustly's refund feature; manage processing deadlines with the EU's 14-day withdrawal right for German consumer transactions in mind.

Germany Trustly payment FAQ

QWhat's the difference between Trustly and generic open banking payments?
Trustly is a specific PSP that, in addition to initiating transfers, provides operational features such as account verification, refunds, and payouts. This reduces operational burden, but means following that provider's policies.
QAre German customers familiar with Trustly?
Brand awareness may be lower than in the Nordics, but the flow of selecting a bank and logging in is already familiar to German consumers, so the barrier to entry is not particularly high.
QWhat currency is settlement made in?
Funds received in euros are converted and paid out in one of USD, KRW, or JPY, as selected under the contract.
QCan specific industries be accepted?
Industry acceptance policy varies depending on Trustly and the contract structure, so it's necessary to specify your product categories and confirm through advance consultation.
