Alipay is not aimed at domestic German consumers but is a cross-border method for Chinese-speaking customers visiting or residing in Germany. The purpose of adopting it is to let users of Ant Group's own wallet and Alipay+ partner wallets pay with the app they already know.
Cities such as Munich, Frankfurt, and Berlin see a steady stream of Chinese tourism and business visitors, and also have sizable communities of Chinese students and expatriate employees. These customers tend to prefer the payment apps they already use at home even while in Germany, so accepting Alipay should be judged not as adding another German payment method, but from the perspective of capturing sales from Chinese-speaking customers.
This suits retail that intersects with Chinese tourist spending, such as duty-free goods, luxury items, and cosmetics, or online services aimed at Chinese-speaking customers. Coverage of domestic German consumers should be secured through separate methods such as PayPal or buy-now-pay-later options.
When a consumer approves payment from their own Alipay app by scanning a QR code or switching apps, the consumer side pays in Chinese yuan while the merchant-side transaction is recorded in euros (EUR). The exchange rate conversion is handled on the wallet side, and merchant settlement proceeds based on the amount Hecto Financial receives.
As this is a cross-border method for Chinese-speaking customers, the terms of acceptance vary depending on your product category and online sales channel mix. Please confirm the scope of contracts available on the basis of a Korean corporation through a consultation.

Confirm whether a contract is available under a Korean business registration
The integration method and priorities differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as an owned storefront, open marketplaces, or a mobile app
Check in advance whether your products fall under a restricted category under Alipay's merchant policies
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Hecto Financial receives the merchant-side transaction amount in euros (EUR), converts it, and pays the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen in the contract. The cycle follows the contract terms.
Because refunds on cross-border wallet payments require a reverse transaction back to the original wallet, there can be a time lag, so it is advisable to inform customers of the processing deadline in advance.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the payment method mix best suited to the German market.
