In Finland, where cash usage has declined rapidly, Apple Pay is a tool that reduces friction in mobile card payments and boosts checkout conversion. Here we cover the criteria for deciding whether to introduce it, from the perspective of merchants with a meaningful share of iPhone-using customers.
Finland, true to Nordic form, has a low cash share and is a cashless market reorganized around cards and mobile wallets. However, in online payments, bank-link methods and the tradition of invoice-based deferred payment remain strong, so rather than replacing these, Apple Pay has established itself as a way to cut down on the input and authentication steps in mobile card payments. A practical strength is that Face ID/Touch ID biometric authentication naturally satisfies PSD2's SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) requirement, resulting in less drop-off from authentication pop-ups.
For merchants with a high share of mobile traffic—such as fashion, digital content, and subscription services—where payment needs to be completed in a single authentication step, this is worth prioritizing as a complement to card payments. Pairing it with bank-link payments and MobilePay, which are familiar to Finnish consumers, is a common combination.
When the consumer taps the Apple Pay button in Safari or an app and authorizes with Face ID/Touch ID, a device-specific token is sent instead of the actual card number, leading to card network approval. This biometric authentication is treated as satisfying the SCA requirement, so in many cases the payment completes without a separate 3DS pop-up. The approved amount is collected by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR), converted, and settled to the Korean merchant in USD, KRW, or JPY as contracted.
A Korean corporation can consider accepting Apple Pay through integration with Hecto Financial, without entering into a separate contract with Apple or a Finnish local card acquirer. Actual support availability and the settlement cycle, fees, and currency options vary depending on business category and transaction volume, so confirmation is needed before contracting.
※ This section describes general support procedures and does not guarantee actual integration availability for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm the exact scope of support and fees.
Confirm contract eligibility for Korea-based merchants
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned storefronts, marketplaces, or mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed as to whether your products fall under restricted categories per Apple Pay's merchant policies
Confirmation is needed as to whether EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA are followed (see official sources below)
Finland transaction amounts paid via Apple Pay are collected by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR), converted, and deposited to the Korean merchant in a single currency—USD, KRW, or JPY—as designated in the contract. Refunds are processed as a cancellation back to the original card, and it is advisable to design refund operating policies with the 14-day withdrawal period guaranteed to EU consumers in mind.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Finland market.
