Alipay is less a payment method for local Finnish consumers than a cross-border payment method aimed at Chinese tourists and Chinese-speaking residents visiting Helsinki. This guide covers the actual scope of usefulness in the Finnish market and what to check before introduction.
Finland is a market where bank-link online banking payments and cards drive everyday transactions, and Alipay is not a member of this local payment ecosystem but rather a cross-border wallet operated by Ant Group and aimed at Chinese-speaking users. The real user base consists of travelers on Asian routes through Helsinki Vantaa Airport, along with Chinese tourists and international students, and through the Alipay+ partner network, coverage can extend to users of partner wallets across Asia.
This is therefore most useful not for targeting Finnish consumers in general, but as a supplementary tool for travel, duty-free, premium retail, and digital content merchants with a confirmed share of Chinese-speaking customers. See the comparison table below for the difference in role compared to payment methods for local Finnish consumers.
When the consumer authorizes payment via QR scan or in-app payment in the Alipay app, the transaction is confirmed through the Ant Group network, and Hecto Financial collects the amount in euros (EUR), converts it, and settles it to the Korean merchant in USD, KRW, or JPY as selected in the contract. The amount is deducted from a renminbi-denominated wallet balance or linked account, following an in-app authentication scheme separate from the SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) applied to EU card payments.
By integrating through Hecto Financial, a Korean corporation can consider accepting Alipay from Chinese-speaking customers visiting Finland without signing a direct cross-border contract with Ant Group. However, support conditions such as settlement cycle, fees, and currency options vary depending on business category and transaction volume, so confirmation with Hecto Financial's sales team is needed before contracting.
※ This section describes general support procedures and does not guarantee actual integration availability for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm the exact scope of support and fees.
Confirm contract eligibility for Korea-based merchants
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned storefronts, marketplaces, or mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed as to whether your products fall under restricted categories per Alipay's merchant policies
Confirmation is needed as to whether EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA are followed (see official sources below)
Alipay transaction amounts generated in Finland are collected by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR), converted, and settled to the Korean merchant in a single currency—USD, KRW, or JPY—as selected in the contract. The settlement cycle follows the contract terms, and since refunds are processed by cancelling the original transaction back to the consumer's Alipay wallet, it is safer to confirm the refund processing deadline at the contracting stage.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Finland market.
