Affirm is a leading provider in the US BNPL market that entered the UK in 2024 and is still at an early stage of adoption there. We cover which merchants its distinguishing features — 3 to 36 month long-term installments and a model with no late fees — suit, and what the payment flow and settlement structure look like.
The UK, Europe's largest e-commerce market, already has fierce BNPL competition from providers such as Klarna and Clearpay, and the US's Affirm is a later entrant that arrived in 2024. However, unlike existing providers that mainly offer biweekly installments, Affirm centers on long-term installments of 3 to 36 months and promotes a model with no late fees, targeting high-value purchase categories such as furniture, electronics, and travel.
If you sell high-involvement products with an average order value of several hundred pounds or more to UK consumers, Affirm's monthly long-term installments can complement price points that short-term 4-installment plans (Clearpay) or pay-later invoicing (Klarna) struggle to cover. Given that brand awareness in the UK is still building, it is more realistic to consider Affirm as a complementary method rather than a standalone introduction.
When a consumer selects Affirm, a real-time review presents an installment plan ranging from 3 to 36 months along with interest terms, and once the consumer confirms the plan, the merchant is paid the amount in full upfront. Repayment then takes place between Affirm and the consumer. Hecto Financial intermediates this transaction and collects the GBP amount, and separately from the credit review, the UK's own UK-SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) requirements apply at the payment authentication step.
Adoption can be considered through Hecto Financial on the basis of a Korean corporation. However, since Affirm's UK service is still in an early stage that began in 2024, the eligible industries and conditions for merchants may be operated conservatively, so the actual availability of support, along with fees and the settlement cycle, must be confirmed before signing a contract.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration availability for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm contract eligibility for businesses registered in Korea
The integration method and priority differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own store, marketplaces, or a mobile app
Advance confirmation is needed as to whether your category falls under restricted industries per Affirm's merchant policy
Affirm is known to have begun operating in the UK under the FCA authorization framework, and compliance requirements may increase as broader FCA oversight of BNPL is legislated
Payment amounts are generated in GBP and collected locally by Hecto Financial, then paid to the Korean merchant after currency conversion in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen at contract signing. The settlement cycle is set according to the contract. Given the nature of long-term installments, a refund involves cancellation or adjustment of the consumer's repayment plan, so the processing timeline should be confirmed before signing the contract, and it is also safer to build the UK's 14-day right of cancellation for distance sales into the refund policy.
The Hecto Financial team will work with you to review the payment method combination best suited to the United Kingdom market.
