BACS Direct Debit is a recurring-billing payment method that pulls funds automatically from a UK bank account, running on the national payment infrastructure operated by Pay.UK. For subscription, membership, and recurring-charge businesses, this guide covers the mandate (debit authorization) structure, the Direct Debit Guarantee, and the settlement flow.
In the United Kingdom, Europe's largest e-commerce market, a large share of subscription and recurring billing is handled through Direct Debit, alongside card auto-billing. BACS Direct Debit is an account auto-debit scheme operated by Pay.UK, and it is the standard for recurring charges ranging from utility bills to SaaS, memberships, and donations. Unlike cards, it never breaks due to expiry or reissue, which makes it advantageous for managing subscription churn.
Korean merchants running subscription services aimed at UK customers (content, SaaS, recurring delivery) should consider it as a strong complement to card auto-billing. That said, it is a non-real-time method with a 3-business-day processing cycle, so it is not suitable for one-off sales that need immediate payment confirmation.
The consumer submits their account details and registers a debit authorization (mandate). From then on, at each billing cycle the merchant initiates a request and funds are automatically pulled from the consumer's account. BACS processing takes a 3-business-day cycle and is not a real-time authorization method, so merchants need an operational process for handling failed debits (insufficient funds, closed accounts) and rebilling notifications. Hecto Financial collects the debited funds in GBP and carries them through to the settlement stage. Since this is not a card payment, UK-SCA card authentication does not apply, but account name verification does take place at mandate registration.
Through Hecto Financial, Korean merchants can explore Direct Debit-based billing without a local UK entity or local bank account. Integration methods and supported conditions vary depending on the recurring-billing business model (billing cycle, whether the amount varies), so please share your service structure with the sales team and confirm details before signing a contract.

This guarantee lets consumers get an immediate refund from their bank in the event of an error or an undisclosed debit. Refunded amounts can come back as a receivable risk for the merchant, so an advance notice process must be in place
Debited GBP funds are collected by Hecto Financial and, after a currency conversion process, paid out to the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY is specified in the contract. One point that deserves particular attention is the Direct Debit Guarantee. For an erroneous debit or a debit made without advance notice, the consumer can obtain an immediate refund through their bank, and in that case funds already settled may be deducted or clawed back — making billing notices and record-keeping essential. When a subscription is cancelled, the cancellation and refund process, including the UK consumer law 14-day right of cancellation, must be clearly explained in the terms and conditions.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right payment method mix for the UK market.
