WeChat Pay is the payment feature built into Tencent's WeChat messenger, and in Slovakia it is a cross-border method that benefits merchants with sales to Chinese tourists, students, and expatriates. We outline the adoption criteria and the settlement structure.
WeChat Pay is the payment feature Tencent operates within the WeChat app, and it is a cross-border method targeting the wallets of Chinese tourists, students, and expatriates rather than local Slovak consumers. In a Slovak payment landscape centered on cards and online banking transfers, the criterion for adopting it is not market share but a merchant's customer mix, and it only pays off when there is actual revenue from customers in Greater China.
Typical applications include Central European tour packages, purchasing and shipping agency services for Greater China, and Chinese-language online services. It is common to adopt it alongside Alipay, which serves the same customer base, so that consumers can use the app they are already accustomed to; adopting only one can leave a coverage gap.
When a consumer scans a QR code in the WeChat app or authorizes an in-app payment, funds are paid from their yuan balance or linked account, while on the merchant side the transaction is processed in euros (EUR). Hecto Financial receives these proceeds, converts them, and settles them with the Korean merchant in the contracted currency among USD, KRW, and JPY. The exchange rate applied on the consumer side follows Tencent's policy and should be confirmed before integration.
Acceptance of WeChat Pay in Slovakia can be reviewed through Hecto Financial's integration without a direct contract with Tencent. Given the nature of cross-border methods, there may be industry restrictions and transaction-structure review, so support availability, fees, and currency options need to be confirmed before contracting.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration availability for any specific merchant. Please confirm exact coverage and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether contracting is possible on the basis of a business registered in Korea
Integration method and priority differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned storefronts, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your category falls under WeChat Pay's restricted merchant policies
Confirmation is needed on compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
From the merchant's perspective, revenue is denominated in euros (EUR); Hecto Financial receives and converts it, then settles domestically in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was specified in the contract. The settlement cycle follows the contract terms. Refunds return to the consumer's WeChat wallet through the original transaction, and for transactions with EU-resident consumers, a 14-day withdrawal request may arise, so processing deadlines should be confirmed.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Slovak market.
