In Slovakia, Discover is not a tool for reaching local consumers but a complementary measure to avoid losing transactions from visitors and expatriates carrying foreign-issued cards, such as those from the United States. We outline which merchants stand to benefit and the settlement structure.
Online payments in Slovakia center on Visa/Mastercard cards and online banking transfers, and there is essentially no local issuance base for Discover cards. Accepting Discover (including the Diners Club network) in Slovakia should therefore be understood not as a strategy for winning local consumers, but as a coverage-expansion measure to prevent failed payments from visitors and expatriates using cards issued abroad, such as in the United States.
The main audience is hospitality and travel services with business-travel demand around Bratislava or a mix of foreign tourist transactions, and digital services serving a global customer base. It is cost-effective to build the foundation of local Slovak revenue around cards (Visa/Mastercard) and online banking transfers, and position Discover as an option that reduces declined-payment cases.
When a holder of a foreign-issued Discover or Diners Club card enters their card details, authorization proceeds through the international network, and transactions within Europe may be subject to Strong Customer Authentication (SCA, 3DS2) under PSD2. Hecto Financial receives and converts the authorized euro (EUR) amount, then settles it with the Korean merchant in the chosen currency among USD, KRW, and JPY.
When integrating with Hecto Financial, acceptance availability can be reviewed without the Korean entity contracting directly with the Discover network. However, actual coverage may vary depending on card acquiring conditions, so coverage, fees, and currency options need to be confirmed before contracting.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration availability for any specific merchant. Please confirm exact coverage and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether contracting is possible on the basis of a business registered in Korea
Integration method and priority differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned storefronts, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your category falls under Discover's restricted merchant policies
Confirmation is needed on compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Discover transactions occurring in Slovakia are likewise recorded in euros (EUR), and the same structure applies in which Hecto Financial receives the funds, converts them, and settles them with the Korean merchant in the contracted currency among USD, KRW, and JPY. The settlement cycle follows the contract terms. Refunds and chargebacks follow international card network rules, and for EU consumer transactions there may be refund requests arising from the 14-day right of withdrawal, so processing deadlines should be confirmed in advance.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Slovak market.
