Alipay is not a method for local Italian consumers, but a cross-border payment method for Chinese visitors and Chinese-speaking residents visiting Milan's luxury shopping district and other major tourist sites. This guide lays out the criteria for judging which merchants stand to benefit.
Italy is a leading European tourism market spanning Milan, Rome, Florence, and Venice, and Milan's fashion district in particular is a high-ticket shopping destination for Chinese visitors. Alipay, operated by Ant Group, is a cross-border method that lets these visitors pay at euro-denominated merchants using the same payment app they use at home, and through the Alipay+ partner network it also covers users of partner wallets across Asia. The starting point for adoption decisions is that Alipay is not a payment method used in everyday life by local Italian consumers.
For a Korean business selling Italy-based products or services to Chinese-speaking customers — such as brokering Italian travel packages and hotel bookings, luxury purchasing agency services, or online sales channels targeting Chinese customers — accepting Alipay directly boosts payment completion rates. If the goal is instead to sell to local Italian consumers, cards, PayPal, and BNPL should be the priority.
When the consumer scans a QR code in the Alipay app or approves via in-app authentication at an online checkout, they pay in yuan while the amount due to the merchant arises in euros (EUR). This EUR amount is received and converted by Hecto Financial, then settled to the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen in the contract. The exchange-rate application point and displayed currency configuration vary by integration method, so confirm during technical discussions.
Integration through Hecto Financial lets a Korean entity consider Alipay acceptance without a Chinese-side license or a separate local contract in Italy. Given the cross-border nature of the method, separate restrictions apply to eligible industries and transaction limits, so confirm with the sales team before contracting.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is possible for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm the exact scope of support and fees.
Confirm whether a contract is available for businesses registered in Korea
Integration method and priority differ depending on your mix of online channels, such as your own storefront, marketplaces, and mobile apps
Check in advance whether your category falls under restricted industries under the Alipay operator's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Consumer payment is made from a yuan-denominated app balance or linked account, but the basis for merchant settlement is euros (EUR). Hecto Financial receives the EUR amount and, after conversion, settles it domestically in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen in the contract, on a cycle set by the contract terms. For refunds, the original exchange rate and fee handling may differ from a standard card refund, so confirm the partial-refund policy in advance.
The Hecto Financial team will help you review the right combination of payment methods for the Italian market.
