Discover is not a card that Italian consumers typically hold day to day — it is a means of accepting payment from visitors and residents who carry cards issued abroad, such as in the US. This guide covers when this complementary method matters in Italy, a major tourism destination.
Italy is a major tourism destination that draws tens of millions of visitors every year and also hosts multinational companies and institutions, making it a market with steady demand for payments on cards issued abroad. Discover is a US-based card network with mutual acceptance through the Diners Club network, and while it has virtually no local issuance base in Italy, it serves as a channel for accepting payment from visitors and expatriates carrying US-issued cards. In other words, it is not a method aimed at Italian locals, but one aimed at foreigners spending money in connection with Italy.
For merchants in Korea selling Italy-related travel products, accommodation, or tours to US customers, or with a confirmed share of US-resident customers, accepting Discover can reduce failed-payment scenarios. If the goal is revenue from local Italian consumers, it's advisable to prioritize major international cards, PayPal, and BNPL first, and add Discover only once transaction logs show attempted payments on that card.
When a shopper pays with Discover or Diners card details, authorization is processed through the international network, and transactions within the EU may be subject to PSD2's Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirement. Hecto Financial receives the approved payment in euros (EUR), converts it, and settles it with the merchant in Korea in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was selected in the contract. The customer is billed based on the currency of their card issuance.
Integrating through Hecto Financial lets a Korean corporation broaden acceptance of cards issued abroad without a separate contract with the Discover network. The actual card types accepted and the applicable conditions vary by business category and transaction volume, so they should be confirmed with the sales team before signing a contract.

A Discover transaction does not mean US dollars land directly in your account. Transactions from Italian merchants are aggregated in euros (EUR), and Hecto Financial receives and converts this amount, settling it domestically in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY is the contract currency (the cycle follows the contract terms). Refunds and chargebacks follow Discover network rules, and because these are cards issued abroad, dispute communication can take longer, so it's worth setting a generous documentation retention period.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Italian market.
