SEPA Direct Debit (SDD) is a pan-European direct debit scheme where the merchant pulls funds after obtaining the consumer's debit mandate. Here are the conditions that suit subscription and recurring-billing businesses in Finland, where invoice-based payment is a way of life.
SEPA Direct Debit is a pan-European direct debit scheme operated by the European Payments Council (EPC), a pull method in which the merchant collects funds based on the consumer's written or electronic mandate (debit authorization). In Finland, where paying recurring bills by invoice is an established habit, it fits naturally with businesses that have repeat billing, such as subscriptions, memberships, and insurance premiums.
Merchants running SaaS or content subscriptions, recurring deliveries, or membership-fee services should consider it first. For one-off sales, however, instant-confirmation methods such as bank-link payment are better suited, given the lag before a debit is confirmed and the possibility of a returned (failed) debit.
Once the merchant obtains a mandate (debit authorization) from the consumer, funds are automatically debited from the consumer's account each subsequent billing cycle. There's no per-transaction authentication, but identity verification at the point of obtaining the mandate matters, and a debit can be returned—for example due to insufficient funds—so re-billing logic is needed. Hecto Financial receives the debited funds in euros (EUR), converts them, and settles with the merchant in Korea in the contracted currency—USD, KRW, or JPY.
Integrating through Hecto Financial lets a merchant based in Korea consider recurring direct-debit billing for Finnish customers without signing a direct debit agreement with SEPA participant banks. Since there are operational requirements such as mandate management and return handling, confirmation through consultation based on your subscription model structure is needed.
※ This section describes the general integration process and does not guarantee that a specific merchant can actually integrate. Please confirm exact coverage and fees through consultation.

Integration method and priority differ depending on your mix of online channels—own site, marketplaces, mobile apps, etc.
Check in advance whether your products fall under restricted categories per the SEPA Direct Debit operator's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment rules such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Debited funds are received by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR) and, after conversion, settled in whichever currency—USD, KRW, or JPY—was selected under contract. One thing to note: under SEPA rules, a consumer can request a refund (reversal) with no reason given for up to 8 weeks from the debit date. Settlement and service-delivery policy must be designed around this receivables risk window, and the EU's 14-day withdrawal right applies separately on top of it.
Hecto Financial's team will help you review the right combination of payment methods for the Finnish market.
