🇫🇮 Finland SEPA Payment Integration Guide

Finnish consumers have been comfortable for over twenty years with verkkomaksu, paying online bills using pankkitunnukset (bank authentication codes). It is a market where the culture of pressing your own bank's button at a shop to pay took hold before cards did. The SEPA on this page implements that familiar gesture on top of the official EPC schemes (SCT and SCT Inst): a one-off payment that initiates the transfer directly in the payment window via open banking payment initiation (PSD2 PIS) and completes approval with bank authentication. It is distinct both from mandate-based automatic debit (SEPA Direct Debit) and from the Pay by Bank (Europe) product that bundles multiple bank integrations into one.

When to consider SEPA payments in Finland

Finland is a eurozone member state and part of the SEPA area, and with the EU Instant Payments Regulation (IPR) taking effect, banks have been required since 2025 to receive SCT Inst (January) and to send it (October). The SEPA here is not a product branded by a particular PSP but the official transfer scheme itself, under which all eurozone banks exchange funds to the same standard in accordance with the EPC rulebook. Thanks to the verkkomaksu (bank-link payment) tradition, for Finnish consumers the payment initiation service (PISP) route is less a new habit than a standardized version of a familiar UX.

Rather than collecting a mandate in advance the way SEPA Direct Debit does, this is a one-off transfer the consumer approves with bank authentication for each payment, and its fee structure gives it an edge over cards on high-value orders. To bundle several European markets into a single product, see Pay by Bank (Europe); for the Finland-specific bank-link method, see Online Banking Finland; for an individual PSP brand, see Trustly; this page covers the SEPA rail itself that all of them stand on.

Basic flow of a SEPA payment in Finland

On a Finnish customer's screen, this payment proceeds at almost the same rhythm as verkkomaksu. When they select their main bank, such as OP or Nordea, at checkout, the payment initiation service (PISP) passes an approval request with the amount and payee filled in to the bank, and the customer confirms the payment with a banking app confirmation or pankkitunnukset-based authentication (SCA). The difference is at the back end. Instead of link integrations that differed from bank to bank, it runs on the standard rail defined by the EPC rulebook, so between SCT Inst banks the deposit is confirmed within seconds, while other combinations are processed on the standard SCT schedule (up to one business day). Hecto Financial converts the EUR that arrives and settles it in the contracted currency among USD, KRW, and JPY.

Hecto Financial's SEPA coverage

Hecto Financial supports domestic merchants in adopting SEPA checkout in Finland through integration with a PSD2-licensed payment initiation service partner. Since the result is finalized immediately upon approval, it's a good idea to design your inventory handling and order confirmation logic around this real-time approval flow.

※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration availability for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm the exact coverage and fees.

What to check before applying and integrating

  • Business registration country

Confirm contract eligibility for businesses registered in Korea

  • Sales channels

The integration approach and priorities vary depending on your mix of online sales channels, such as your own site, open marketplaces, and mobile apps

  • Product categories

Check in advance whether your products fall under restricted categories per the SEPA payment initiation partner's merchant policy

  • EU regulatory compliance

Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)

Settlement currency, cycle, and refund conditions

The settlement structure runs in order: EUR received, conversion by Hecto Financial, and payout in the contracted currency among USD, KRW, and JPY, with the cycle following the contract terms. Because it is a push transfer the customer initiates themselves with pankkitunnukset authentication, neither card network chargebacks nor the automatic debit scheme's 8-week unconditional refund right exists, which is an advantage for risk management. In exchange, there is no automatic path for refunds either. Every return, including a Finnish consumer's 14-day right of withdrawal, must be handled with a separate refund transfer the merchant sends to the customer's account.

Finland SEPA Payment FAQ

QHow is this different from verkkomaksu bank-link payments?
The sequence the customer experiences is almost the same, but the back end differs. Verkkomaksu is a per-bank individual integration, whereas the SEPA on this page runs on the standard rail defined by the EPC rulebook via PSD2 APIs, so a single integration can cover banks across the eurozone. For the Finland-specific bank link, see the Online Banking Finland page.
QIs pankkitunnukset used as-is for payment approval?
Yes. Approval is carried out with the strong customer authentication (SCA) means each bank provides, whether a banking app confirmation or an authentication code, exactly as the customer normally does in online banking.
QWhat is the relationship with the Pay by Bank (Europe) product?
SEPA is the rail (the official EPC scheme), and Pay by Bank (Europe) is a product that layers multiple bank integrations and authentication flows on top of that rail and bundles them into one. If multi-country expansion is your goal, choose the latter; if your goal is to check the conditions of the Finnish SEPA rail itself, this page is the one to read.
QBy what route do funds go back on a return?
A completed transfer cannot be canceled, so there is only one route: the merchant transfers the return amount to the customer's account. Put a refund process in place that also accounts for requests within the right of withdrawal period.
