🇫🇮 Finland MobilePay Payment Integration Guide

MobilePay is a mobile payment app that has become part of everyday life for Finnish consumers; after merging with Norway's Vipps in 2022, it now operates as a brand under Vipps MobilePay AS. This page covers the criteria for introduction from the perspective of the app as used locally in Finland.

When to consider MobilePay payments in Finland

MobilePay is a phone-number-based mobile payment app that started in Denmark and spread to Finland; after merging with Norway's Vipps in 2022, it now operates as a brand under Vipps MobilePay AS. In Finland, it is widely used for P2P transfers and in-store and online payments, forming one pillar of checkout alongside bank-link payments and cards. Guidance from the perspective of the merged entity and coverage across the three Nordic countries is covered separately on the Finland Vipps MobilePay page.

Since payment completes with a single app push, the impact is significant for merchants with small-value, mobile-centric transactions and a high share of younger customers. If you are a social commerce or mobile-first store where collecting card details is difficult, this is worth prioritizing alongside bank-link payments.

Basic flow of MobilePay payments in Finland

When the consumer selects MobilePay at checkout, a payment request is sent as an app push notification, and once the consumer reviews and approves it in the app, the amount is deducted from the linked card or account. In-app authentication doubles as compliance with SCA (Strong Customer Authentication). The approved amount is collected by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR), converted, and settled to the Korean merchant in USD, KRW, or JPY as contracted.

Hecto Financial's MobilePay coverage

By integrating through Hecto Financial, a Korean corporation can consider accepting MobilePay from Finnish customers without signing a direct merchant agreement with Vipps MobilePay. Since this is a period when the product lineup is being reorganized following the merger, please confirm the support scope and terms at the time of integration before contracting.

※ This section describes general support procedures and does not guarantee actual integration availability for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm the exact scope of support and fees.

What to check before merchant application and integration

  • Business registration country

Confirm contract eligibility for Korea-based merchants

  • Sales channel

The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned storefronts, marketplaces, or mobile apps

  • Product category

Advance confirmation is needed as to whether your products fall under restricted categories per MobilePay's merchant policies

  • EU regulatory compliance

Confirmation is needed as to whether EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA are followed (see official sources below)

Settlement currency, cycle, and refund conditions

MobilePay transaction amounts are collected by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR), converted, and settled to the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was designated in the contract. Refunds are processed as a cancellation of the original in-app transaction, and to prepare for EU consumers exercising their 14-day withdrawal right, it is advisable to confirm the cancellation deadline and whether partial refunds are supported at the integration stage.

Finland MobilePay Payment FAQ

QSince MobilePay merged with Vipps, does the app name change in Finland?
In Finland, it continues to operate under the MobilePay brand; what changed is that the operating entity has been consolidated into Vipps MobilePay AS. It is best understood as consolidation at the corporate/infrastructure level rather than a change in the consumer experience.
QWhat is the settlement currency?
Consumer payment amounts are collected by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR), and after conversion, are settled only in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was selected in the contract.
QHow does this page differ from the Vipps MobilePay page?
This page covers introduction from the perspective of the MobilePay app actually used by Finnish consumers, while the Vipps MobilePay page covers the brand structure and coverage across the three Nordic countries from the perspective of the merged entity.
QCan I introduce this without a local entity in Finland?
Contracting based on a Korean corporation can be considered when integrating through Hecto Financial. Whether support is available depending on business category and transaction structure needs to be confirmed through consultation.
