WeChat Pay is the payment feature built into Tencent's messaging super-app WeChat. In Austria, like Alipay, it functions as a cross-border payment method for Chinese visitors and residents. Its differentiator is the ability to combine payment with marketing across the WeChat ecosystem, including Mini Programs and official accounts.
For Chinese travelers, searching, sharing, and booking often all happen inside WeChat, and WeChat Pay's strength is that payment is completed within that same app. In a market like Austria, which has strong purpose-driven tourism content such as classical music and Alpine winter travel, it's possible to provide Chinese-language information through a WeChat official account or Mini Program and take payment right there. As with Alipay, this is not a payment method aimed at local Austrian consumers.
It suits tours, performance tickets, and premium retail aimed at Chinese-speaking customers, or businesses that gather customers through WeChat channels. Rather than simply adding a payment method, it delivers the best return when designed together with WeChat marketing-channel operations.
The consumer opens the payment request inside the WeChat app and authorizes it with a payment password or biometric authentication; a web checkout uses QR scanning, while mobile uses an in-app call (H5). With a Mini Program payment, everything from browsing products to paying happens without leaving the app. Merchant revenue is processed in euros (EUR), collected by Hecto Financial, converted, and paid out to the merchant in Korea in whichever currency—USD, KRW, or JPY—was set in the contract.
Acceptance by merchants outside China follows cross-border program requirements, such as restricted industries and real-name transaction limits. Using Mini Program payments requires a separate setup process, so it's best to specify your target channel clearly when consulting with Hecto Financial.

Confirm contract eligibility for businesses registered in Korea
The integration approach and priorities vary depending on your mix of online sales channels, such as your own site, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Check in advance whether your products fall under restricted categories per WeChat Pay's operator merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Refunds are returned to the wallet based on the original transaction, and partial-refund rules apply depending on the timing of the cancellation. Settlement follows the same path as other payment methods: EUR collection, currency conversion, and payout in the chosen currency of USD, KRW, or JPY. Even for Chinese-speaking customers, if the purchase qualifies as a distance sale within the EU, be sure to clarify in your terms whether Austrian consumer-protection rules (such as the 14-day right of withdrawal) apply.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Austrian market.
