Discover is a US-based card network linked to the Diners Club network, and it has almost no local issuance base in Europe, including Austria. This page is therefore written not as a method for Austrian consumers but from the standpoint of a complementary method for visitors and residents carrying cards issued abroad.
The starting point for this decision is the fact that Discover is effectively absent from local Austrian consumers' wallets. Because issuance within Europe is almost nonexistent, the value of accepting it comes from visitors, expatriates, and international students holding Discover or Diners cards issued in places like the United States. Given the market's characteristics—international tourism centered on Vienna and Salzburg, plus demand from international organizations and expatriates—this niche exists, but its scale is limited.
For travel-related industries where payment with foreign-issued cards is routine—accommodation, tours, ticketing—or for services aimed at English-speaking customers, accepting it has value in preventing failed payments. For a general consumer goods shop, it is more efficient to deprioritize this and first complete your eps, card, and deferred-payment combination.
The payment flow is the same as a standard card, following card data entry and an approval process; since cards issued outside the EEA, such as those from the US, are not subject to PSD2's Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirement, whether a 3DS check is applied depends on the issuer's own policy. When the consumer pays in euros, that amount (EUR) is received by Hecto Financial, converted, and then settled in the contracted currency—USD, KRW, or JPY.
Whether Discover and Diners are accepted depends on whether the acquirer supports the network. When consulting with Hecto Financial, separately confirm the scope of supported networks (Discover, Diners Club, and partner networks) and the applicable fees.

Confirm contract eligibility based on domestic business registration
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix—owned mall, open marketplace, mobile app, and so on
Check in advance whether your products fall under categories restricted by Discover's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Since this is a lower-volume complementary method, the separate reporting burden in settlement reports is minor. The structure is the same as other methods—euro receipt followed by conversion and payout in the chosen currency (USD, KRW, or JPY)—and refunds and chargebacks follow standard card procedures. As this remains a sale within the EU, the 14-day right-of-withdrawal return policy for Austrian buyers must be applied the same way regardless of card type.
Hecto Financial's dedicated team will help you review the right combination of payment methods for the Austrian market.
