Alipay is China's leading mobile wallet, operated by Ant Group, and in Austria it functions as a cross-border payment method for Chinese-speaking tourists and residents rather than local consumers. If your business sees a significant share of tourist spending, it is worth considering acceptance, including coverage through the Alipay+ partner network.
In Austria, Alipay's customers are not Austrians but visiting Chinese-speaking consumers. There is clear demand for paying with a familiar home-country wallet along shopping routes in central Vienna and at tourist destinations popular with Chinese visitors, such as Salzburg and Hallstatt, and through the Alipay+ partnership, users of partner wallets from Southeast Asia and elsewhere can also be covered through a single acceptance channel. The premise for adoption is recognizing that this is not a payment method for local consumers.
The areas where it delivers real value are souvenir, luxury, and duty-free-linked retail aimed at tourists, tour and ticketing businesses with Chinese-language service, and online sales targeting Chinese-speaking residents. Korean merchants can also use it in scenarios such as selling Austria-related travel products or booking services to Chinese-speaking customers.
For online payments, the consumer selects Alipay, moves to the app, and approves the payment with a password or biometric authentication; for in-person channels, payment is completed by presenting or scanning a QR code. Even though the consumer pays in Chinese yuan, merchant sales are processed in euros (EUR), and Hecto Financial receives these funds and settles them, after currency conversion, in the contracted currency—USD, KRW, or JPY.
Due to the nature of Chinese regulations, real-name account and transaction limit policies apply, and industry restrictions also differ from those for global card networks. The scope of coverage for Alipay+ partner wallets varies by contract configuration, so be sure to confirm this explicitly during consultation.

Confirm contract eligibility based on domestic business registration
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix—owned mall, open marketplace, mobile app, and so on
Check in advance whether your products fall under categories restricted by Alipay's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Refunds are generally returned to the wallet balance based on the original transaction, and processing timelines differ from those for cards. Given the nature of tourist spending, cancellations and no-show refunds are more common than returns, so disclosing your refund policy in advance is effective for preventing disputes. Settlement follows the structure of EUR receipt followed by currency conversion and payout in the selected currency—USD, KRW, or JPY—and when remote sales to EU consumers are involved, you should also review whether local consumer protection rules, such as the 14-day right of withdrawal, apply.
Hecto Financial's dedicated team will help you review the right combination of payment methods for the Austrian market.
