Alipay is Ant Group's payment platform, and in Malaysia it matters in two ways: as a touchpoint for Chinese tourists and Chinese-speaking consumers, and as a link to local wallets through the Alipay+ partner network. The fact that Touch 'n Go eWallet, Malaysia's largest wallet, has an investment and technology partnership with the Ant group also strengthens the Alipay ecosystem's presence in this market.
Malaysia is a market with both a large Chinese-Malaysian community, which makes up a significant share of the population, and steady demand from Chinese tourists. The mainland Alipay app's actual users are mostly visitors, but Ant International's Alipay+ cross-border network bundles multiple Asian wallets into a single acceptance channel, giving merchants a high degree of integration efficiency. Combined with the interoperable QR policy that the central bank has been pushing forward, accepting foreign wallets for local payments is becoming increasingly natural.
For categories with a high share of Chinese-speaking customers, such as content aimed at Chinese-speaking audiences, travel and duty-free-linked commerce, or sales of Korean-wave (hallyu) products to Chinese-speaking fandoms, accepting the Alipay family of payments can translate directly into sales. On the other hand, if your primary target is the general Malay consumer, it makes more sense to prioritize FPX, DuitNow, and TNG, and treat Alipay as a supplementary method.
Consumers pay using the balance or linked payment source in the Alipay app or an Alipay+ partner wallet, and online transactions are approved via app redirection or QR scan. Hecto Financial receives the payment in ringgit, converts it, and pays the Korean merchant in the currency designated in the contract among USD, KRW, and JPY.
Through Hecto Financial, a Korean company can consider accepting Alipay without entering into a separate cross-border contract with Ant. However, the coverage of each Alipay+ partner wallet varies by timing and contract, so you should confirm during consultation whether the wallets your target customers use are included.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that a specific merchant can actually integrate this method. Please confirm the exact coverage and fees through consultation.
Confirm eligibility to contract as a business registered in Korea
The integration method varies depending on whether you are online-only or also include physical stores in Malaysia
Check in advance whether your products fall under restricted categories per Alipay's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with Malaysia's payment and foreign exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Funds paid through the Alipay family are received by Hecto Financial not in RMB but in ringgit, the currency in which the payment originates, then converted and paid to the Korean merchant in a single currency selected in the contract among USD, KRW, and JPY. The settlement cycle and fee rate follow the contract terms. Refunds go back to the wallet the consumer used, so be sure to confirm the processing timeline under Alipay's return policy.
The Hecto Financial team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Malaysian market.
