WeChat Pay is the payment feature built into Tencent's WeChat messaging app. In the United Kingdom it is a cross-border method for accepting payments from Chinese tourists, international students, and residents. What sets it apart from Alipay is that payment is tied into marketing within the WeChat ecosystem (official accounts, mini programs).
In the UK's market of Chinese-speaking visitors and residents, centered on London, WeChat Pay is one of the two leading payment apps for Chinese consumers, alongside Alipay. Its defining feature is that it goes beyond simple payment and connects to touchpoints with Chinese customers (marketing, customer service) through WeChat official accounts and mini programs. Like Alipay, it is not intended as a method for local UK consumers.
If you are already running, or plan to run, a marketing channel for Chinese customers on WeChat, it makes sense to complete payment within WeChat as well. If you have no plans to run such a channel and only need to accept payments, compare priority against Alipay based on your own customer data.
When a Chinese consumer selects WeChat Pay at checkout, they are switched to the WeChat app, or scan a QR code, and approve the payment with a password or biometric authentication. The consumer pays in yuan, while the merchant transaction is processed in GBP and collected by Hecto Financial. Since it is an in-app payment that does not go through the card network, WeChat's own authentication system applies instead of the UK's UK-SCA card authentication.
Cross-border acceptance of WeChat Pay can be reviewed through Hecto Financial on the basis of a Korean corporate entity. Because Chinese-side regulations may restrict certain product categories, advance confirmation based on the items you sell is required.

Confirm whether a contract is available for merchants registered in Korea
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own store, open marketplaces, or mobile apps
Check in advance whether your products fall under categories restricted by WeChat Pay's merchant policy
This is a method for Chinese customers, not for local UK consumers. Base your adoption decision on whether you run a WeChat channel and on your share of Chinese-speaking customers
WeChat Pay revenue arises in GBP and is collected by Hecto Financial, then converted and paid out to Korean merchants in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was set in the contract. Refunds are returned to the consumer as a cancellation of the original WeChat Pay transaction, and since local consumer protection rules (such as the 14-day cancellation right) may apply to sales within the UK, it is advisable to align your return deadline policy accordingly.
The Hecto Financial team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the UK market.
