Maestro is Mastercard's debit brand, but new issuance in Europe stopped in July 2023, and existing cards are being replaced with Debit Mastercard upon expiry. In the United Kingdom it is a declining method that cannot be the core of a new payment strategy, and it is only worth considering from the perspective of complementary coverage for customers who still hold the card.
There's a fact to confirm first. Mastercard stopped new issuance of Maestro in Europe from July 2023, and existing cards are being progressively replaced with Debit Mastercard as they expire. In the United Kingdom, Europe's largest e-commerce market, the center of gravity for payments has also shifted to Visa Debit, Debit Mastercard, and digital wallets, so it is not appropriate to make Maestro a pillar of a new payment strategy.
That said, until the replacement is complete, some consumers will keep using Maestro cards, so for merchants seeking to maximize card acceptance coverage, it is realistic to consider it at the level of confirming acceptance as a "complementary option for existing cardholders." For a wallet strategy aimed at general UK customers, refer to the Apple Pay and Google Pay pages.
The payment process for remaining Maestro cards is the same as for a regular debit card. After the card details are entered, authorization takes place through the Mastercard network, and UK online transactions are subject to 3-D Secure authentication under UK-SCA (Strong Customer Authentication). Hecto Financial collects the approved funds in GBP. Given that new issuance has stopped and usage volume is gradually shrinking, this should be reflected in your integration priorities.
Acceptance can be reviewed through Hecto Financial on the basis of a Korean entity, but since this is a declining brand, an inquiry framed around checking overall card acceptance coverage is recommended rather than a standalone adoption. Actual support availability and terms need to be confirmed through consultation.

Confirm whether a contract is available on the basis of a Korean business registration
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix — owned storefront, marketplaces, mobile app, and so on
Check in advance whether your product category falls under restricted industries per the Maestro operator's merchant policy
Since this is a brand for which new issuance in Europe has stopped, the actual benefit of adoption should be weighed against the cost of maintaining it. UK card authentication requirements follow the UK-SCA standard under FCA jurisdiction, not the EU
When a Maestro transaction occurs, funds are collected in GBP, and Hecto Financial converts and settles them to the Korean merchant in the contracted currency (a choice of USD, KRW, or JPY). Refunds are processed as cancellations of the original transaction, and handling of return rules such as the 14-day right of cancellation that applies to UK consumer sales can be run through the same process as other card methods.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right payment method mix for the UK market.
