Apple Pay is a tokenized card wallet that customers authorize on iPhone or Apple Watch using Face ID or Touch ID. In Sweden, where online simple-payment is already a daily habit, we've summarized the key points for Korean merchants looking to reduce checkout drop-off among iOS customers.
Sweden is a world-leading cashless country where cash usage has fallen below 10%, and like the rest of the Nordic region, it has high penetration of tokenized wallets such as Apple Pay. In a market where finishing a payment with the device's biometric authentication, instead of typing in card details, has already become the standard experience, whether an Apple Pay button is present directly affects mobile conversion rates for any business targeting a customer base with a meaningful iOS share.
Priority is highest for fashion, beauty, and digital subscription businesses with a large share of mobile Safari and in-app purchases. However, since Apple Pay is a card-based wallet, in Sweden — where there is a clear segment that prefers direct bank transfers (Swish) and another that prefers buy-now-pay-later (Klarna) — running it alongside these national methods, rather than on its own, is the standard combination.
In online payments, when a consumer taps the Apple Pay button, the tokenized card stored on the device is invoked, and the payment is completed with Face ID or Touch ID authorization. The actual card number is never passed to the merchant, and the biometric authentication itself satisfies PSD2's Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirement, reducing drop-off from a separate 3DS pop-up. Hecto Financial receives the authorized amount in SEK.
Integrating through Hecto Financial lets a Korean company explore adopting Apple Pay payments without a separate local contract in Sweden. Whether support is actually available, and the terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options), vary depending on the merchant's business category and transaction volume, so confirmation with the Hecto Financial sales team is needed before signing a contract.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is actually available for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract can be signed on the basis of a Korean business registration
The integration method and priorities differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own site, marketplaces, and mobile apps
Check in advance whether your business falls under a category restricted by Apple Pay's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Since Sweden is not part of the eurozone, the currency for payment and receipt is the Swedish krona (SEK). After Hecto Financial receives the amount in SEK, it is converted and settled to the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was selected under the contract, with the cycle following the contract terms. Refunds are processed as a cancellation against the original payment card, and given EU consumer regulations, your return policy should reflect the possibility that Swedish buyers may request a withdrawal within 14 days.
The Hecto Financial team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Swedish market.
