Alipay is a Chinese wallet operated by Ant Group, and in Europe it functions as a cross-border payment method not for local consumers but for Chinese tourists and Chinese-speaking residents. This guide is for merchants targeting Chinese-speaking customers who visit or live in Sweden.
In Sweden, Alipay is not a method for Swedish people. Local consumer payments are handled by Swish, cards, and Klarna, while Alipay is a cross-border channel that lets Chinese tourists visiting Stockholm, along with Chinese-speaking residents such as international students and expatriate employees pay using their balance or account back home. Another notable feature is that, through the Alipay+ partner network, coverage can extend to users of partner wallets across Asia.
The criterion for adoption is therefore not 'targeting the Swedish market' but 'whether you have a touchpoint with Chinese-speaking customers.' It is worth considering for travel and duty-free-linked commerce that serves Chinese tourist demand, services aimed at Chinese-speaking international students, or K-commerce operators running a Chinese-language page — while coverage of local Swedish consumers should be secured through separate methods such as Swish and Klarna.
For online payments, when a consumer chooses Alipay, authorization occurs through app authentication or a QR scan. Even though the consumer pays based on their own currency, such as RMB, the merchant transaction is processed in the local display currency. Hecto Financial receives the proceeds of Swedish transactions in SEK, and the exchange rate applied on the consumer side is handled by Alipay.
Integrating through Hecto Financial lets a Korean company explore adopting Alipay payments without a separate local contract in Sweden. Whether support is actually available, and the terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options), vary depending on the merchant's business category and transaction volume, so confirmation with the Hecto Financial sales team is needed before signing a contract.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is actually available for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract can be signed on the basis of a Korean business registration
The integration method and priorities differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own site, marketplaces, and mobile apps
Check in advance whether your business falls under a category restricted by Alipay's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Hecto Financial converts the SEK amount it receives and settles it to the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was selected under the contract. For tourist transactions, the buyer has often already left the country by the time a refund is issued, so it is important to confirm the original wallet refund pathway and its processing time; and for any transaction that qualifies as a sale to an EU-domestic consumer, consumer protection standards such as the 14-day right of withdrawal should also be checked.
The Hecto Financial team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Swedish market.
