The Nordic region is the home of the deferred-payment culture of receiving goods first and paying by invoice afterward, and Klarna, operated by Sweden's Klarna Bank AB (which holds a banking license), is Europe's largest BNPL service and a leading representative of that culture. This guide sets out how to make use of it in Norway, a market with high income levels and high order values.
Norwegian consumers have among the highest per-capita purchasing power in Europe, resulting in many high-value orders, and they are also accustomed to the invoice-based pay-later and installment culture that originated in neighboring Sweden. In this market, Klarna offers Pay Now (immediate payment), Pay Later (deferred invoice), and installment payments all through a single checkout, and it is operated directly by Klarna Bank AB, which holds a banking license.
For Korean merchants selling to Norway in categories with large basket sizes, such as furniture, appliances, or premium fashion, whether pay-later and installment options are available can be decisive for the purchase decision itself. The ability for first-time customers to try a purchase on deferred payment without exposing card details is also an advantage for new brands.
When a consumer selects Klarna at checkout, a real-time credit assessment is performed, and once approved, Klarna confirms payment to the merchant and then collects from the consumer through a deferred invoice or installments. If the consumer chooses Pay Now, payment is made immediately by bank transfer or card. From the merchant's perspective, the flow is simplified to receiving settlement through Hecto Financial after approval is confirmed.
Because accepting Klarna's pay-later and installment options tends to involve an industry review, the order of operations is to first confirm, through consultation with Hecto Financial, whether a contract is viable on the basis of a Korea-registered entity and the terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options). This can in some cases be reviewed even without a local Norwegian entity.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that any specific merchant can actually be integrated. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is possible on the basis of a Korea-registered business
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own storefront, open marketplaces, or mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your business falls under a category restricted by Klarna's operator merchant policy
As an EEA country rather than an EU member, Norway applies EU payment rules (such as PSD2) through the EEA route. Cross-border contracts should check the applicable regulations in advance (see official sources below)
Proceeds from transactions approved by Klarna arise in NOK, and regardless of the consumer's deferred or installment payment schedule, Hecto Financial receives and converts these funds and settles to the Korean merchant in the contracted currency: USD, KRW, or JPY. Given how often returns occur with deferred payment, the refund processing deadline should be confirmed at the contract stage, and since returns under the EEA's 14-day right of withdrawal are also common in Norway, it is good practice to design the invoice cancellation process alongside it.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Norwegian market.
