BankAxept is Norway's domestic debit card network, operated by BankAxept AS. It overwhelmingly dominates in-store POS payments, but online payment support is limited. Because whether remote cross-border acceptance is even viable for a Korean online merchant is itself something to be confirmed, this page takes a conservative view.
Most card payments made at checkout counters in Norwegian stores pass through the BankAxept network. However, this debit network was traditionally designed around POS, so its e-commerce support is limited, and because most cards issued in Norway are co-badged with Visa or Mastercard, it is common for online payments to be routed through the international brand instead. So whether a structure even exists for a Korean merchant to accept BankAxept directly online must be confirmed before contracting.
A more realistic approach is not to target BankAxept on its own, but for businesses with an offline presence in Norway (a pop-up store or a local partner location) to consider POS acceptance, while covering online sales with international card brands and methods such as Vipps. Merchants that sell online only should review the alternative-method pages before this one.
In stores, this is a domestic-network debit flow in which the consumer taps a card (or a mobile-issued equivalent) at the terminal and approves with a PIN. Online, because BankAxept's own e-commerce support is limited, the same card is often processed through the co-badged Visa or Mastercard route instead, in which case 3DS authentication under PSD2 Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), applied via the EEA, comes into play. Confirming through consultation whether a remote integration for a Korean merchant is even viable should come first.
BankAxept is a method whose viability for remote online acceptance must be confirmed from the outset. Please review, through consultation with Hecto Financial, which integration form is possible (direct acceptance on the domestic network, or routing through the co-badged international network) and the resulting settlement cycle, fees, and currency options.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that any specific merchant can actually be integrated. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is possible on the basis of a Korea-registered business
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own storefront, open marketplaces, or mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your business falls under a category restricted by BankAxept's operator merchant policy
As an EEA country rather than an EU member, Norway applies EU payment rules (such as PSD2) through the EEA route. Cross-border contracts should check the applicable regulations in advance (see official sources below)
Assuming a configuration where acceptance is viable, proceeds in NOK from BankAxept transactions are received locally by Hecto Financial, converted, and then settled to the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was selected in the contract. The settlement cycle and refund process depend on which integration route actually applies (direct on the domestic network, or via the co-badged international network) and must be finalized at the contract stage, and it should also be factored in that the 14-day withdrawal right adopted under the EEA framework applies to remote sales to Norwegian consumers.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Norwegian market.
