Norway is a market where using card-based digital wallets is an everyday habit, and as a high-income market it has one of the highest rates of premium-device penetration, such as iPhone, which puts Apple Pay acceptance near the top of the region. This guide sets out the payment flow and settlement structure Korean merchants need when targeting iOS users in Norway.
Norwegian consumers default to card payments online, but carrying that card in a wallet app has quickly become the standard way to use it. High income levels mean Norway has one of Europe's highest rates of premium-device penetration, such as iPhone and Apple Watch, and because payments in Safari and in-app checkouts can be completed with just Face ID approval, this is a market with clear advantages for mobile conversion.
Korean businesses running subscription services, mobile commerce, or app-based sales that are sensitive to drop-off during checkout should consider Apple Pay not as a supplement to card payments but as a default option. It also serves to capture the global iOS user base that Vipps, the local national app, cannot absorb.
When a consumer taps the Apple Pay button, a device-specific token (DPAN) is sent instead of the actual card number, and the payment is approved through Face ID or Touch ID authentication. This biometric authentication is treated as satisfying PSD2 Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), which applies across the EEA, reducing friction from a separate 3DS input step. The approved transaction is passed to Hecto Financial through the card network.
Because Apple Pay adds a wallet layer on top of card payment integration, it is reviewed together within the scope of Hecto Financial's card acceptance contract. Whether a contract is possible on the basis of a Korea-registered entity, and the fees and settlement terms, vary by industry and transaction volume, so prior consultation is required.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that any specific merchant can actually be integrated. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is possible on the basis of a Korea-registered business
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own storefront, open marketplaces, or mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your business falls under a category restricted by Apple Pay's operator merchant policy
As an EEA member, Norway applies EU payment rules such as PSD2 and Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), with oversight handled by Finanstilsynet (the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway) (see official sources below)
Settlement starts from the Norwegian krone (NOK). Hecto Financial receives the NOK proceeds locally, converts them, and then pays out to the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was selected in the contract, on a cycle set by the contract terms. Refunds are processed as a reversal to the original card. Also, given the 14-day right of withdrawal practice that applies to online sales in Norway under the EEA agreement, it is advisable to have return policies in place in advance.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Norwegian market.
