Google Pay is a wallet that stores tokenized cards in a Google account, offering one-click checkout in Android apps and on the Chrome web. In a Netherlands where iDEAL is the standard, Google Pay plays a complementary role as a card-based, simplified path for Android users.
iDEAL accounts for about 70% of Dutch e-commerce payments, with card-based methods playing a secondary role, but for consumers who have stored a card on their Android device or in Chrome, Google Pay offers a one-click checkout path with no data entry required. Since bank debit cards, which are common in the Netherlands, can also be registered, it works around the constraint of low credit card penetration.
Korean merchants running Android-heavy gaming or utility apps, or mobile-web-centric commerce, are candidates to consider. While the similarly wallet-based Apple Pay is strong in iOS in-app checkout, Google Pay differs in that it also covers Chrome web autofill and Android in-app checkout, which is where the two split by channel.
When a consumer taps the Google Pay button, the card stored in their account is transmitted as a token, and identity is verified through device unlock or biometric authentication, satisfying PSD2's SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) requirement. The approved euro (EUR) amount is received by Hecto Financial, converted, and settled to Korean merchants in the contracted currency among USD, KRW, and JPY.
Korean companies can consider accepting Google Pay through Hecto Financial without a local contract in the Netherlands. Since it is configured together with the underlying card network's acceptance terms, it is more accurate to consult about it together with the card payment terms.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is actually possible for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm the exact scope of support and fees.
Confirm whether contracting is possible on the basis of a Korean business entity
The integration method and priority differ depending on your online sales channel mix — own storefront, online marketplace, mobile app, etc.
Confirm in advance whether your products fall under a restricted category per the Google Pay operator's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Transactions approved via Google Pay are processed as card payments, generating a euro (EUR) amount, which Hecto Financial receives and converts before paying Korean merchants in the currency set at the time of contracting among USD, KRW, and JPY. Because this is a card-based method, chargeback handling and refund deadlines should be operated in line with card network rules.
The Hecto Financial team will help you review the right combination of payment methods for the Netherlands market.
