Thailand is one of the most visited destinations for Chinese tourists, and their spending flows through the Alipay payments they use at home. This page covers the requirements for Korean merchants who need to convert spending by Chinese visitors to Thailand into sales, by accepting Alipay.
In Thailand, the core demand for Alipay comes not from local residents but from Chinese tourists, whose numbers have recovered to several million a year. In tourist commercial districts such as Bangkok and Phuket, Alipay QR payment, familiar to Chinese consumers, has become essentially a must-accept method, and the structure of covering multiple Asian wallet users through a single integration via Alipay+ connectivity is also spreading. Alipay is one of the world's largest mobile payment platforms, operated by China's Ant Group, with a user base reported to exceed 1 billion.
For merchants where spending by Chinese visitors in Thailand forms a core pillar of sales, such as duty-free and travel products or hotel and activity bookings, Alipay is a high-priority method. Conversely, if you are targeting only local Thai consumers, it makes more sense to consider PromptPay and TrueMoney first and treat Alipay as a supplementary method. See the table below for how the roles of each method differ.
When a Chinese consumer scans a QR code with the Alipay app they use at home, or logs in and approves payment at an online checkout, funds are withdrawn from the consumer's balance or linked account, and the merchant-side transaction is processed in baht (THB). Hecto Financial receives and converts the THB funds and settles with the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was selected under the contract. Given the nature of cross-border transactions, the exchange rate application timing and cancellation rules must be confirmed before integration.
Cross-border Alipay merchant onboarding normally requires separate review and a contract, but through Hecto Financial, a Korean entity can consider accepting Alipay for the Thailand market. Review criteria by industry, such as tourism and duty-free, and fee and settlement terms, are finalized through consultation.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration eligibility for any specific merchant. Please confirm exact coverage and fees through consultation.
Confirm contract eligibility for businesses registered in Korea
The integration method differs depending on whether you are online-only or also include offline stores in Thailand
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your business falls under a restricted category under Alipay's merchant policy
Confirmation is needed on compliance with Thailand's payment and foreign exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Alipay transaction funds for the Thailand market are aggregated in baht (THB), and Hecto Financial receives them in the local currency, then converts and pays out to the merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was designated under the contract. The settlement cycle and fee rate are fixed according to the contract terms. Refunds are returned by canceling the original transaction on the consumer's Alipay account, and given the nature of cross-border refunds, it is safer to confirm the processing timeline before signing the contract.
Hecto Financial's team will help you review the right combination of payment methods for the Thailand market.
