Apple Pay is a payment method that registers a tokenized card on an Apple device and authorizes payment in an in-app or web checkout using Face ID or Touch ID biometric authentication. In Peru too, major banks have supported card registration over the past few years, and it is establishing itself as an online payment option for urban iPhone users.
Online payments in Peru are largely built around the Yape and Plin wallets and cash payments, and even the payment experience of cardholders is rapidly shifting toward wallet-based methods. Apple Pay lets consumers tokenize cards from major Peruvian banks onto their device, completing an online payment with a single biometric authentication and no card number entry. Because actual card details are never passed to the merchant, it reduces both fraud risk and checkout drop-off at the same time.
Peru's iPhone user base tends to be concentrated among upper-middle-income consumers in urban areas like Lima, making it a good fit for merchants dealing in premium fashion, electronics, or cross-border direct-purchase goods. It can be attached to both Safari web checkout and iOS in-app payments, making it a priority option for merchants with a significant share of app-based sales.
When a consumer taps the Apple Pay button at checkout, the tokenized card stored on the device is invoked, and authorization is completed via Face ID or Touch ID. Since a device token is passed instead of the actual card number, the burden of additional authentication such as 3-D Secure tends to be lower, and the authorization result is returned in real time, confirming the order immediately.

Apple Pay authorizations from Peruvian consumers are collected locally in PEN (Sol), just like regular card payments. Hecto Financial converts this and settles it in the currency selected under contract among USD, KRW, or JPY, and refunds are returned to the consumer's card by canceling the original transaction. The settlement cycle follows the contract terms.
