Western Union is a global company operating remittance and cash-collection networks, and it is also widely known in Argentina as a channel for receiving remittances. However, its viability as an e-commerce checkout method is limited, so this page offers a conservative view of the criteria to consider.
In Argentina, Western Union is a brand with strong recognition in the context of receiving remittances from family abroad or dollar-related transactions. However, it is not a payment method commonly presented on standard online shopping checkout pages, and sending order proceeds as a remittance differs from a standard checkout method in terms of confirmation delays, cancellation handling, and fund tracking. This structural difference should be understood first when considering adoption.
Where it can have a role is in scenarios involving high-value, low-frequency transactions — such as education fees or B2B-style pre-orders — where consumers won't drop off even if they need to follow a separate remittance process as instructed. For mass-market consumer commerce, Mercado Pago, cards, and bank channels should be prioritized, with Western Union considered only as an exception after its viability has been verified.
Where this method is viable, the flow works as follows. After placing an online order, the consumer sends a Western Union remittance to the receiving details provided, and the order is confirmed once receipt of the remittance is verified. Because this is not a real-time approval method, confirmation can take time, and the proceeds received are converted and settled in the contract currency.
Whether Western Union-based collection through Hecto Financial is actually available for a given merchant's business type and transaction structure must be confirmed in advance. Even where it is viable, operational design is also needed — for example, matching orders to remittances and automatically canceling unpaid orders — so these details should be worked out during the consultation stage.

Confirm compliance with Argentina's payment and foreign exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Even where viability has been confirmed and the method is in operation, the settlement principle stays the same. Funds received locally are converted by Hecto Financial and settled in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was contracted, and given the remittance-based nature of these transactions, the deadlines for deposit confirmation, cancellation, and return procedures must be spelled out specifically in the contract. Because Argentina's foreign exchange regulations directly affect remittance and conversion terms and are highly volatile, we recommend confirming the rules in effect at the time of contracting and including a renegotiation clause for changes.
