PayPal is a global wallet that lets consumers pay using a card or balance linked to their account; in Argentina, it is mainly used for cross-border purposes such as paying overseas merchants. Here are the key adoption points from the perspective of a Korean merchant.
For Argentine consumers, PayPal is less an everyday payment method than something encountered in cross-border transactions, such as paying foreign websites or receiving freelance income. In a market where years of foreign exchange controls have restricted access to internationally usable cards and dollars (though there are reports of a recent easing trend, its continuation cannot be assumed), PayPal's user base is concentrated among consumers who already have experience with overseas payments.
For cross-border commerce where a Korean merchant sells directly into Argentina — K-pop merchandise or internationally shipped goods, for example — PayPal is a trustworthy option for this customer segment, which is already comfortable with overseas payments. If the goal is to reach the local mass market, Mercado Pago and local card networks should take priority, with PayPal serving as a complement.
When a consumer selects PayPal, they log into their account and approve the payment using a linked card or their balance, with card details never passed to the merchant. The flow of funds and currency handling after approval can vary depending on PayPal's integration structure, but merchant settlement is made through Hecto Financial in the contracted currency.
Whether and under what conditions PayPal can be accepted depends on the merchant's business type, transaction type (physical or digital goods), and dispute-risk profile. We recommend deciding where PayPal fits for sales into Argentina by comparing it against other local methods in a Hecto Financial consultation.

Merchant settlement is made only in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen at contracting; there is no arrangement for depositing Argentine pesos directly. The consumer's payment currency and conversion path can vary depending on PayPal's transaction structure and local foreign exchange rules, and since Argentina is a market where these rules themselves are highly changeable, settlement and conversion terms and refund processing deadlines must be clearly confirmed at the time of contracting. Also factor PayPal's own separate dispute process into your refund policy design.
