Apple Pay is a service that approves web and in-app payments using cards tokenized and stored on Apple devices such as the iPhone, and registration of cards from major issuers is now available in Argentina as well. This page sets out the market context needed to decide on adoption.
Because Argentina's smartphone market is overwhelmingly Android and its payment ecosystem is led by Mercado Pago, Apple Pay functions less as a broad-coverage payment method and more as a premium option for a specific customer segment. Still, with Apple Pay registration now open for cards from major banks and issuers in Argentina, it is a meaningful online payment touchpoint for the relatively affluent iPhone user base.
For commerce targeting the local upper-income segment, such as high-value goods or premium brands, a checkout experience that completes with a single biometric authentication in Safari or in-app can boost conversion. Conversely, if you are targeting the mass market, it makes more sense to first establish wallet and card channels and treat Apple Pay as a secondary option.
When a consumer taps the Apple Pay button at checkout, the card stored as a token on the device is presented, and approval completes with Face ID or Touch ID authentication. Because a device token is exchanged instead of the actual card number, the risk of card data exposure is low, and the approved peso amount is received, converted, and settled in the contract currency.
Since Apple Pay acceptance fundamentally runs on top of card payment infrastructure, it should be reviewed together with the approval scope for cards issued in Argentina. Implementation requirements, such as how the button is displayed on the web (Safari) versus in-app, should be worked out according to Hecto Financial's integration guide.

Transactions approved via Apple Pay follow the same currency flow as card transactions. Consumers pay in pesos, and Hecto Financial handles receiving and converting ARS before settling in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was set in the contract. Refunds are processed as a cancellation of the original transaction and returned to the original tokenized card. Since the direction of Argentina's foreign exchange regulations is hard to predict, the detailed conversion and settlement conditions should be fixed as of the time of contracting.
