Headquartered in Buenos Aires, Mercado Pago is the most widely used payment account in Argentina. Here is what Korean merchants need to know about the market background, payment flow, and settlement structure when accepting this wallet through Hecto Financial.
Argentina is a market where consumers moved rapidly from cash to digital accounts through a period of high inflation, and e-commerce transaction value continues to grow substantially year over year in peso terms. At the center of this is Mercado Pago, a service that Mercado Libre — Latin America's largest commerce group — has built up from Buenos Aires; in its home market of Argentina, it functions as a de facto national payment method, spanning account-balance payments, registered-card payments, and installment (cuotas) options.
Looking purely at online sales, it works especially well for consumer-goods merchants who need to reduce friction all the way to checkout, such as digital content, fashion, or K-beauty. Because a large share of Argentine consumers have already registered a card to this account through their Mercado Libre shopping experience, it's often the first method worth considering for merchants looking to boost first-purchase conversion.
When a consumer chooses Mercado Pago at checkout, they log into their account and approve the payment using one of their balance, a registered credit or debit card, or an installment option. The approval result is confirmed in real time, and Hecto Financial receives the transaction proceeds locally in ARS before converting and settling with the merchant in the contracted currency.
A Korean corporation can consider accepting Mercado Pago under a single Hecto Financial contract, without needing a local entity or a local account in Argentina. Given the nature of wallet payments, however, business-type screening and a review of the transaction structure come first, and details such as fees and the settlement cycle are finalized during the consultation process.

Confirm whether a contract is available under a Korean business registration
The integration method and priorities differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as an owned storefront, open marketplaces, or a mobile app
Check in advance whether your products fall under a restricted category under Mercado Pago's merchant policies
Confirm compliance with Argentina's payment and foreign exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Payment proceeds are first received locally in Argentine pesos (ARS). Hecto Financial then converts these funds and settles the merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen at contracting; the pesos themselves are not deposited directly into the merchant's domestic account. Refunds are returned to the consumer's account by canceling the original wallet transaction. As Argentina is a market where foreign exchange regulations have changed frequently (though there has recently been a trend toward easing, this cannot be assumed to continue), the exchange rate applied to conversion, the settlement cycle, and refund processing deadlines must always be confirmed against the terms in effect at the time of contracting.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the payment method mix best suited to the Argentine market.
