🇺🇸 United States Apple Pay Payment Integration Guide

Apple Pay is Apple's wallet service that pays with a card tokenized and stored on an iPhone or Mac, authorized with Face ID or Touch ID. Since roughly half of US smartphones are iPhones, it is effectively a default option to consider for Korean merchants serving US consumers on mobile web and in apps.

Where Apple Pay moves the needle on conversion in the United States

The US is a leading iOS-strong market where iPhone share reaches roughly half of all smartphones, and in Safari and in-app environments the Apple Pay button replaces card number and shipping address entry with a single biometric authentication. Card details are stored as a device-specific token (device account number), so the actual card number is never exposed to the merchant or payment network — a structure that delivers both security and payment speed, which is why it has become established as a go-to method.

The effect is clear-cut for merchants concerned about mobile web checkout abandonment, especially in categories with a high share of mobile purchases such as fashion, beauty, and digital content. For a US-facing app service with a high share of iOS users, simply placing Apple Pay as the first option in the in-app checkout flow can deliver a noticeable conversion improvement.

Basic flow of US Apple Pay payments

When a consumer taps the Apple Pay button on Safari web or in an app, a payment sheet opens, and the device's tokenized card is approved via Face ID or Touch ID authentication. Shipping address and contact details are also passed through the sheet, eliminating manual entry steps, and the approved funds are collected by Hecto Financial in USD, then converted and paid out in the contracted currency. Tokenization itself acts as an online authentication mechanism that reduces the risk of card number exposure.

Hecto Financial's Apple Pay coverage

Through Hecto Financial integration, Korean merchants can also review Apple Pay acceptance on their US-facing web and app. Because there are online integration requirements such as Apple's domain verification, you need to confirm the applicable setup based on your own store's environment (web/app, browser configuration), and the detailed conditions are worked out through a consultation with the sales team.

※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is available for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through a consultation.

What to check before applying and integrating

  • Business registration country

Confirm whether a contract is available for merchants registered in Korea

  • Sales channels

The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own store, open marketplaces, or mobile apps

  • Product categories

Check in advance whether your products fall under categories restricted by Apple Pay's merchant policy

  • Local regulatory compliance

Confirm compliance with US payment and foreign exchange rules, including federal and state consumer protection and card network rules (see official sources below)

Settlement currency, settlement cycle, and refund conditions

US transaction funds approved via Apple Pay are collected in USD, then converted and paid out to the merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen in the contract. Refunds are returned to the tokenized original card, so clearly stating in consumer messaging that 'the refund goes to the card originally used' can reduce inquiries. The payout cycle and fee terms follow what is specified in the contract.

US Apple Pay Payment FAQ

QIs adding Apple Pay alone enough for US mobile payments?
Not quite. Roughly the other half of US smartphones are Android, so Google Pay needs to be offered alongside it to complete wallet payment coverage. Placing both wallets side by side is the standard setup.
QDoes the merchant end up storing the consumer's card number?
No. Apple Pay pays with a device-specific token (device account number), so the actual card number is never passed to the merchant. This reduces both the burden of storing card data and the risk of exposure.
QWhat currency is US Apple Pay revenue settled in?
Funds collected in USD are converted and paid out in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen in the contract. Being a wallet method does not change the settlement structure.
QWhich browsers support it on the web?
It is supported primarily through Safari, and the extent of exposure can vary by environment. It is safest to check your own store's browser usage distribution and offer an alternative method for customers in unsupported environments.
