This is a guide to Alipay for Korean merchants whose customers include Canada's Chinese communities, international students, and visitors. It covers who this method is for and the online payment flow and settlement currency structure needed to decide on adoption.
Canada, centered on Toronto and Vancouver, has large Chinese immigrant communities and a large population of Chinese international students, many of whom keep using the Alipay account they held back home. Alipay is a wallet operated by Ant International, and the starting point for deciding on adoption is that it is not a payment method for local Canadian consumers, but a cross-border method used with accounts issued in Greater China.
For online merchants with some share of Chinese-speaking customers, such as study-abroad preparation and language services, cosmetics and food commerce aimed at Chinese customers, or booking and ticketing services for the Chinese diaspora, this can be considered as a channel that captures customers who are reluctant to use overseas card payments. If the general Canadian consumer is your main target, it should be a lower priority.
When a Chinese customer in Canada selects Alipay at checkout, the flow either switches to the Alipay app or has them scan an on-screen QR code with the app and approve via password or biometric authentication. The transaction is established in CAD, and Hecto Financial receives it, converts the currency, and settles in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was agreed in the contract. The currency shown to the consumer and the exchange rate handling on that side are managed by Alipay.
Integrating through Hecto Financial lets a Korean company explore adopting Alipay payments without a separate contract with a local Canadian entity. Because this method is aimed at Chinese-market customers, review criteria may apply depending on industry and product category, so support conditions along with the settlement cycle and fees should be confirmed with Hecto Financial's sales team before signing a contract.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is available for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm contract eligibility as a Korean business
The integration approach and priority differ depending on your mix of online sales channels, such as your own store, open marketplaces, or a mobile app
Confirm in advance whether your category falls under Alipay's restricted merchant policies
Confirm compliance with Canada's payment and foreign exchange regulations (see the official sources below)
The settlement currency is separate from the payment currency. A Chinese customer's payment is recorded as revenue in CAD, and Hecto Financial receives it; the merchant is then paid, after currency conversion, in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was set in the contract. Fluctuations in the yuan exchange rate are handled at the stage where the amount is shown to the consumer, so the merchant does not directly bear CNY exchange risk, and refunds are returned to the consumer's Alipay account by canceling the original transaction.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Canadian market.
