In Canada, where iPhone usage is high, Apple Pay is a leading wallet-based payment method for reducing mobile checkout drop-off. This guide covers the tokenized, biometric-authentication-based online payment method and the structure for receiving CAD and settling in one of three selectable currencies.
Canada has one of the world's highest card penetration rates and a mobile commerce share that keeps growing, and because iPhone usage is relatively high, most major bank cards support Apple Pay registration. Apple Pay stores tokenized card information on the device and approves payments via Face ID or Touch ID biometric authentication in the Safari web or in-app checkout, which results in less drop-off than typing in a card number directly, and the actual card information is never passed to the merchant.
This is worth prioritizing for merchants with an own-store or app with a high share of mobile traffic, especially in industries like fashion, ticketing, and subscriptions where immediacy and repeat purchases matter. Because it works in both the Safari web checkout and in-app checkout, its scope of applicability is broad even for stores without a dedicated app.
When a consumer selects Apple Pay at the payment button, the tokenized card stored on the device is invoked and approval is completed with Face ID or Touch ID authentication. A device-specific token is sent instead of the actual card number, and combined with the card network's online authentication (such as 3-D Secure), this lowers the risk of fraudulent use. The approved CAD proceeds are received and converted by Hecto Financial, then settled in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was agreed in the contract.
Integrating through Hecto Financial lets a Korean company explore adopting Apple Pay payments without a separate contract with a local Canadian entity. Because this wallet method is designed alongside your existing card payment setup, the scope of applicable channels (web, in-app) along with fees and settlement conditions should be confirmed with Hecto Financial's sales team before signing a contract.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is available for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm contract eligibility as a Korean business
The integration approach and priority differ depending on your mix of online sales channels, such as your own store, open marketplaces, or a mobile app
Confirm in advance whether your category falls under Apple Pay's restricted merchant policies
Confirm compliance with Canada's payment and foreign exchange regulations (see the official sources below)
From a settlement standpoint, Apple Pay transactions are the same as card transactions. Hecto Financial receives the amount a Canadian consumer approved in CAD, converts the currency, and pays the merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was set in the contract. Refunds are returned to the consumer's card based on the tokenized original transaction, and the settlement cycle and the point at which the exchange rate applies should be confirmed against the contract terms.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Canadian market.
