🇪🇸 Spain Alipay Payment Integration Guide

Alipay, operated by Ant Group, is China's leading mobile payment method, and in Spain it functions as a cross-border tool for Chinese tourists and customers from the greater China region rather than local consumers. This guide summarizes which businesses stand to benefit and how the acceptance structure works through Hecto Financial.

When to consider Alipay payments in Spain

Spain is a world-class tourism destination that welcomes tens of millions of visitors each year, and a significant share of payments comes from foreign visitors. Local consumers pay by card and Bizum, but Chinese visitors want to keep using the Alipay they use at home. Through the Alipay+ partner network, Alipay also covers users of major Asian partner wallets, so it should be reviewed on the premise that it is a cross-border method rather than one aimed at local Spanish consumers.

Duty-free, fashion, and luxury commerce, online stores with a meaningful share of customers from the greater China region, and businesses selling Spanish travel products and activities can create a real difference in payment completion rates simply by offering a payment experience that yuan users are already familiar with. Conversely, if your customers are mostly local Spanish consumers, a combination of card, Bizum, and PayPal should take priority.

Basic flow of Alipay payments in Spain

When a customer scans a QR code in the Alipay app or selects Alipay at online checkout and approves the payment via in-app authentication, the merchant's revenue is recorded in euros (EUR) regardless of the customer's yuan-denominated payment. Hecto Financial collects this payment in euros, converts it, and settles it with the Korean merchant.

Hecto Financial's Alipay coverage

Integrating through Hecto Financial lets a Korean corporation consider Alipay cross-border acceptance without a local Spanish contract or a separate entity in China. Actual eligibility and terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options) vary by industry and transaction volume, so confirmation with the sales team is required before signing a contract.

※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is possible for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through a consultation.

What to check before applying and integrating

  • Business registration country

Confirm contract eligibility based on domestic business registration

  • Sales channels

The integration approach and priority differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own site, open marketplaces, and mobile apps

  • Product categories

Check in advance whether your category falls under restricted industries per Alipay's merchant policy

  • EU regulatory compliance

Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)

Settlement currency, settlement cycle, and refund terms

Alipay transaction proceeds arise in euros (EUR) based on the Spanish merchant account, and Hecto Financial collects them in euros before converting and paying out to the Korean merchant in whichever currency — USD, KRW, or JPY — was set in the contract. Refunds are processed as cancellations of the original Alipay transaction, and the 14-day right of withdrawal that applies to distance sales within the EU should also be reflected in your operating policy.

Spain Alipay payment FAQ

QDo local Spanish consumers also use Alipay?
No. Alipay is a service based on mainland Chinese accounts, and in Spain its primary users are Chinese tourists and customers residing in the greater China region. Reaching local consumers requires separate methods such as card and Bizum.
QWhat currency is settlement made in? Is it related to the yuan?
Merchant revenue is recorded in euros (EUR), and after Hecto Financial collects and converts it, settlement is made in whichever contracted currency — USD, KRW, or JPY — applies. Even though the customer pays in yuan, it has no effect on the merchant's settlement currency.
QShould we adopt WeChat Pay alongside it?
Chinese mobile payments are split between Alipay and WeChat Pay, so if your share of customers from the greater China region is meaningful, accepting both methods is advantageous for coverage. Please also refer to the Spain WeChat Pay page.
QCan customers using Alipay+ partner wallets also pay?
In some cases, the Alipay+ partner network allows you to accept payments from users of major Asian partner wallets. However, the range of supported wallets varies by integration method, so this needs to be confirmed before contracting.
