Bizum is a mobile payment service jointly operated by major Spanish banks. It started as person-to-person (P2P) money transfer and is rapidly expanding into online payments. However, the scope of remote acceptance for overseas merchants is still something that needs to be confirmed, so this page focuses on the conditions to check when considering adoption.
Spain is one of the largest e-commerce markets in Southern Europe, and while card remains standard, the bank-backed joint service Bizum is reshaping the payment landscape. With more than 25 million users, Bizum started as person-to-person transfer and is expanding acceptance into online store payments, with its strength being the simplicity of completing an account-based payment using just a phone number.
That said, Bizum's online merchant acceptance has expanded mainly around domestic Spanish merchants, so the scope of remote (cross-border) acceptance available to a Korean business must be confirmed through Hecto Financial before contracting. If you have a high share of local Spanish consumers and a customer base that favors account-based payment (digital content, everyday-life commerce, etc.), it is worth reviewing after going through this confirmation process.
When a consumer selects Bizum at checkout, their bank account is identified by their phone number, and after bank app authentication (satisfying PSD2 Strong Customer Authentication, SCA), an instant transfer is made from the account. Hecto Financial collects the approved payment in euros (EUR), converts it, and settles it with the Korean merchant. However, the scope of support for remote payments to overseas merchants requires technical and contractual confirmation before integration.
Integrating through Hecto Financial starts with confirming whether a Korean corporation can consider Bizum acceptance without establishing a local entity in Spain. Because Bizum is a joint service of Spanish banks, its acceptance scope and industry policy for overseas merchants differ from card networks, so confirming actual eligibility and terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options) with the sales team before contracting is essential.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is possible for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through a consultation.
Confirm contract eligibility based on domestic business registration
The integration approach and priority differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own site, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Check in advance whether your category falls under restricted industries per Bizum's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Bizum payment proceeds arise in euros (EUR), and Hecto Financial collects them locally before converting and settling with the Korean merchant in one of the three currencies — USD, KRW, or JPY — chosen in the contract. The settlement cycle follows the contract terms, and because this is an account-transfer-type method, refunds may be processed as a separate return transfer rather than a cancellation of the original transaction. In addition, since EU consumers have a 14-day right of withdrawal for distance sales, please prepare your refund operating process in advance.
Hecto Financial's team will help you review a payment method mix suited to the Spanish market.
