🇱🇹 Lithuania Discover Payment Integration Guide

Discover is not a card issued locally in Lithuania, but an acceptance option for visitors and residents holding Discover or Diners Club cards issued abroad, such as in the United States. Here are the criteria for deciding whether to adopt it as a complementary method.

When to consider Discover payments in Lithuania

Discover (including the Diners Club network) has virtually no local issuance base in Europe, so it cannot become a primary payment method targeting Lithuanian consumers. However, Lithuania is a market with growing international exchange as its IT and business services industries expand, and the real role of this method is preventing failed payments for customers holding cards issued abroad, such as American business travelers and visitors. It is also worth noting that, through network partnerships with card networks in various countries, cards issued abroad may be accepted through the Discover network.

For service industries with a meaningful share of English-speaking visitors — accommodation, transportation, events — or online services that also serve global customers, adding Discover to the card stack as a complementary option is appropriate. If you serve only domestic Lithuanian customers, this is a lower priority.

Basic flow of Discover payments in Lithuania

When a cardholder pays with a Discover card number, the issuer authorizes it through the Discover network, and for online transactions within Europe, a 3DS2 process addressing PSD2 Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) may also apply. The authorized amount is received by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR), converted, and settled to the Korean merchant in whichever currency — USD, KRW, or JPY — was set under the contract.

Hecto Financial's Discover coverage

Integrating through Hecto Financial lets a Korean company explore Discover acceptance on the basis of a Korean entity, and it is typically configured as part of the card acceptance stack rather than adopted on its own. Given its focus on cards issued abroad, please confirm expected transaction volume and terms through consultation before signing a contract.

What to confirm before applying and integrating

  • Merchant registration country

Confirm whether contracting is possible for merchants registered in Korea

  • Sales channels

Integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix — owned storefront, marketplaces, mobile apps, etc.

  • Product categories

Check in advance whether your products fall under restricted categories according to the Discover operator's merchant policy

  • EU regulatory compliance

Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)

Settlement currency, settlement cycle, and refund terms

Discover transaction funds are received by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR) at the amount confirmed at the time of payment, and after conversion, settled to the Korean merchant in whichever currency — USD, KRW, or JPY — was chosen under the contract. Cards issued abroad can involve both the issuing country's rules and EU rules together, and since the 14-day right of withdrawal applies to sales made to consumers within the EU, it is best to organize refund and chargeback handling under a common card-payment policy.

Lithuania Discover payment FAQ

QDoes Discover help with revenue from Lithuanian consumers?
Since there is almost no local issuance base, the impact on domestic customer revenue is limited. It is more accurate to view this as a method for handling visitors, business travelers, and foreign residents holding cards issued abroad, such as in the United States.
QCan I choose USD settlement?
Yes. Transaction funds are received in EUR, but domestic settlement is made in whichever currency — USD, KRW, or JPY — is chosen under the contract, so USD settlement is possible.
QAre Diners Club cards also accepted?
Discover and Diners Club are connected through the same network, so they are generally processed together. Detailed coverage should be confirmed during integration.
QWhat about chargeback risk?
Chargeback procedures exist just as with other card networks. For cards issued abroad, it is safer to also review fraud screening criteria.
