WeChat Pay is Tencent's messenger-based wallet, and in Greece it functions as a cross-border method targeting Greater China customers who plan and spend during their travels within the WeChat ecosystem. This guide covers how its role differs from Alipay's, along with the settlement structure.
Among Greater China travelers visiting Greece, group and family travelers and those who gather travel information through WeChat official accounts and mini programs tend to carry that behavior through to payment via WeChat Pay as well. Because messaging and payment are combined in one structure, it is possible to build a sales flow that runs entirely within WeChat, from booking inquiries through to payment—a point that sets it apart from Alipay.
This suits travel agencies, hotels, and ticket sellers who handle customers through WeChat channels, and merchants receiving inquiries from Greater China customers via WeChat. Since this is not a method aimed at local Greek consumers, if your local customer share is large, it is appropriate to consider it as a secondary priority alongside cards, IRIS, and similar methods.
The transaction is completed when the consumer opens the payment request within the WeChat app and approves it with their wallet password or biometric authentication. Authentication runs on WeChat's own system (separate from the SCA procedure under EU card schemes), and the merchant-side transaction amount is processed in euros (EUR) and received by Hecto Financial. If you plan to sell through mini programs or official accounts, you should decide the payment integration method (in-app or QR) in advance.
Through Hecto Financial, a Korea-based entity can consider accepting WeChat Pay without a direct contract with Tencent. Since cross-border merchant registration may require industry documentation, prior consultation covering your product categories is recommended.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration eligibility for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm contract eligibility as a Korea-based business
The integration approach and priority vary depending on your mix of online sales channels, such as your own store, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed as to whether your business falls under WeChat Pay's restricted-industry merchant policies
Confirmation is needed on compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
WeChat Pay transaction proceeds are received by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR), then converted and paid to the Korean merchant in whichever currency—USD, KRW, or JPY—was agreed at contract. Keep in mind during settlement reconciliation that the RMB amount shown on the consumer's screen differs from the settlement base currency.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Greek market.
