Alipay is a China-centric wallet payment method operated by Ant Group. In Europe, it's a cross-border method not for local Greek consumers but for Chinese tourists and Chinese-speaking residents. This guide focuses on its use in Greece, a major tourism destination.
In tourism powerhouse Greece, Chinese visitors are among the key spending groups in destinations such as Santorini and Athens. Alipay is a cross-border method that lets these visitors pay using the same app they use at home, and its coverage is expanding further to Southeast Asian wallet users through the Alipay+ partner network. It should be considered on the premise that it is not a method for local Greek consumers.
It suits hotel, tour, and ferry bookings serving Chinese-speaking travelers, online sales of duty-free goods and souvenirs, or global online stores with a mix of Chinese-speaking customers. Conversely, if your customer base is mainly local Greek residents, cards, IRIS, and global wallets should take priority over Alipay.
The consumer checks the amount, denominated in yuan, in their Alipay app and approves payment with a password or biometric authentication, while the merchant-side transaction is processed in euros (EUR). Since this is account-based payment through a Chinese wallet, it uses Alipay's own authentication scheme, separate from the strong customer authentication (SCA) procedure applied to EU card payments. The approved funds are then received by Hecto Financial and move into the settlement stage.
Through Hecto Financial, a Korean corporation can consider accepting Alipay without a separate contract in China. However, industry-specific registration requirements and product restrictions may apply, such as for the tourism and travel industry, so the coverage and conditions should be confirmed through consultation before contracting.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration availability for a specific merchant. Please confirm exact coverage and fees through consultation.
Confirm contract eligibility based on domestic business status
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own store, open marketplaces, or mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed to check whether your business falls under Alipay's restricted-industry policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see the official sources below)
The transaction amount on the merchant side is received by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR) and, after conversion, settled in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY is selected under the contract. Note that even though the amount is shown to the consumer in yuan in their app, the settlement flow is based on receiving euros.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Greek market.
