🇩🇰 Denmark SEPA Payment Integration Guide

The defaults of Danish e-commerce are the Dankort card and MobilePay, and demand for account-based payments is taken up by DKK open banking services such as Trustly. The SEPA on this page is a third strand, neither of those. It is a euro-only "Pay by Bank" one-off transfer that executes the EPC standard schemes SCT and SCT Inst directly at checkout via PSD2 payment initiation (PIS), and it does not work from a krone (DKK) account. In other words, it should be read as a method for "customers in Denmark with a euro account," not for "all Danish customers."

When to consider SEPA payments in Denmark

Denmark has not adopted the euro and continues to use its own currency, DKK, but on the payments-infrastructure side it does participate in SEPA, so open-banking-based SEPA Credit Transfer / Instant Credit Transfer also works for euro-denominated accounts. That said, everyday payments in Denmark are dominated by Dankort and MobilePay, and the segment that needs account-based payment is already well served by DKK-based open banking A2A methods such as Trustly, so the SEPA discussed on this page is meaningful only, separately from those two pillars, for customers who hold a euro account and for B2B transactions.

In short, the criterion for the adoption decision is the account currency of your customer base. If you are a service that issues invoices in euros, or if corporate customers operating euro accounts clearly exist, it is worth considering as a mandate-free, per-transaction approval transfer; if you are targeting DKK consumers in general, this method is not the answer.

Basic flow of a SEPA payment in Denmark

Following the path of the money makes the character of this method clear. When a customer with a euro account selects their bank at checkout and completes authentication on the approval screen raised by the payment initiation service (PISP), the funds move in EUR from start to finish. On an SCT Inst-connected route they arrive in Hecto Financial's receiving account within seconds, otherwise on the standard SCT schedule, and are then converted and paid out domestically in the contracted currency among USD, KRW, and JPY. What is distinctive is that no DKK conversion enters anywhere along this path, which, put the other way around, means customers who hold only a DKK account cannot get onto it, so designing the payment screen conditions to expose this option only to euro-account customers reduces drop-off.

Hecto Financial's SEPA coverage

Even when targeting Denmark, SEPA is a scheme built on euro-denominated accounts, so when consulting with Hecto Financial you should first confirm your billing-currency design and the applicable customer scope (customers who hold a euro account). Contract eligibility and terms for a Korea-registered business vary by industry and transaction structure.

What to check before applying and integrating

  • Business registration country

Confirm contract eligibility for businesses registered in Korea

  • Sales channels

The integration approach and priorities vary depending on your mix of online sales channels, such as your own site, open marketplaces, and mobile apps

  • Product categories

Check in advance whether your products fall under categories restricted by the SEPA payment initiation partner's merchant policy

  • EU regulatory compliance

Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)

Settlement currency, settlement cycle, and refund terms

The settlement the merchant receives follows the same three-currency structure as other payment methods. Hecto Financial receives and converts the EUR and pays out in the contracted currency among USD, KRW, and JPY on the contracted cycle. On the risk side, because this is a transfer the customer approves and pushes themselves, there are no chargebacks, and the 8-week unconditional refund right of mandate-type automatic debits does not apply either. That said, precisely because finality is strong, refunds must be handled not as an automatic cancellation but as a merchant-initiated reverse transfer, and you should build the channel and procedure for receiving Danish consumers' 14-day right of withdrawal requests into your settlement operations in advance.

Denmark SEPA Payment FAQ

QHow is this different from MobilePay?
MobilePay is Denmark's national wallet app covering everyday DKK payments, whereas the SEPA on this page is a pan-European transfer scheme initiated only from euro accounts. The customer segments they target are different, so they are not substitutes for each other; for DKK consumers, consider MobilePay or Trustly.
QDoes DKK conversion enter the settlement process?
No. The funds start as EUR from the customer's euro account, pass through Hecto Financial's receipt and conversion, and are paid out in the contracted currency among USD, KRW, and JPY. DKK does not appear anywhere on this path.
QWhen does the SEPA instant transfer mandate take effect for Danish banks?
Denmark is an EU member state that has not adopted the euro, so its EU Instant Payments Regulation (IPR) timeline is later than the eurozone's (2025), falling in 2027 (reception in January, sending in July). Until then you should confirm SCT Inst support bank by bank and also prepare a waiting UX for cases processed as standard SCT.
QIf a customer raises a dispute, are the funds clawed back as with a card chargeback?
No. A push transfer the customer approved directly has no chargeback procedure. If a return is needed, the merchant executes a separate refund transfer to the customer's account, and having a right of withdrawal response procedure in place beforehand is all that is required.
