This document is for merchants evaluating a bank-payment channel via Banco Continental in Guatemala. Because a bank of the same name exists in Honduras and confusion is possible, we take a conservative approach: confirm the entity's actual presence in Guatemala and the scope of its collection partnership before deciding on adoption.
Guatemala is a market where paying at a bank counter or through an agent is widely used to complete online transactions. Even without a bank account or card, a consumer can pay using just a reference number at a bank channel, which fits well with the market's cash-driven, remittance-based economic structure. However, the name "Banco Continental" can be confused with a bank of the same name in Honduras, so before contracting, you must confirm whether an entity actually provides collection services under this name in Guatemala and whether the payment collection partnership is valid.
If you sell mass-market-priced products with a large share of card-less customers—such as household goods, educational content, or physical deliveries to remittance-receiving households—a bank-payment channel can fill the gap left by wallets and cards. However, since this page's channel is contingent on confirming its actual existence, we recommend keeping other methods in the comparison table below as your primary offering until that is confirmed.
The typical bank-payment flow is as follows. When a consumer places an order online, a reference number is issued, and the consumer pays the amount using that reference number through the bank's online banking or at a branch counter. The order is confirmed once the deposit is confirmed, and Hecto Financial converts the proceeds received in GTQ and settles them in the contracted currency among USD, KRW, or JPY. However, whether the Banco Continental channel is actually available in Guatemala and how long payment confirmation takes must be confirmed before integration.
By integrating through Hecto Financial, a Korea-based entity can consider adopting a bank-payment channel without a local contract in Guatemala. However, a precondition for this method is confirming the entity's actual presence and collection partnership in Guatemala, and actual support availability and conditions (settlement cycle, fees, settlement currency) require confirmation with Hecto Financial's sales team before contracting.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration eligibility for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm contract eligibility as a Korea-based business
The integration approach and priority vary depending on your mix of online sales channels, such as your own store, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed as to whether your business falls under Banco Continental's operator's restricted-industry merchant policies
Confirmation is needed on compliance with Guatemala's payment and foreign-exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Even when this channel is confirmed to be viable, the settlement structure is the same. Hecto Financial receives the paid quetzal amount, converts it, and pays out the merchant in whichever currency—USD, KRW, or JPY—was selected at contract. Because bank-payment methods confirm orders only after deposit confirmation, cancellations and refunds may proceed through a more manual process than with cards (such as a bank transfer back to the payer), so agree on the specific refund method and timeline during contracting.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Guatemalan market.
