WeChat Pay is a payment service built into Tencent's WeChat messenger, and in Spain it is a cross-border method aimed not at local consumers but at Chinese visitors and Chinese-speaking resident customers. We outline adoption criteria, including how it differs from Alipay in being built on a social ecosystem.
In Spain, where commercial districts like Barcelona and Madrid see a clear inflow of Chinese-speaking visitors, WeChat Pay is a method that goes beyond simple payment to connect into marketing touchpoints through WeChat official accounts and mini programs. Because Chinese consumers' mobile payments are split between Alipay and WeChat Pay, accepting only one means missing the payment preference of the other half. The premise that this is not a method for local Spanish consumers is the same as with Alipay.
For travel, duty-free, and luxury commerce targeting Chinese customers, or businesses that gather customers through WeChat channels, there is an advantage to handling payment and customer engagement touchpoints within a single ecosystem. For industries with large swings between tourism high and low seasons, review fee terms with transaction volume fluctuations in mind.
When a customer approves a payment in the WeChat app via QR scan or in-app checkout, the amount is deducted from their yuan-denominated account, but the merchant's sales are received in euros (EUR). Hecto Financial collects this euro amount, converts it, and then settles it to the merchant in Korea, and payments made within mini programs follow the same settlement flow.
Through Hecto Financial, a Korean merchant can review cross-border acceptance of WeChat Pay without a separate entity in China. Industry restrictions and settlement terms vary depending on cross-border policy, so confirmation with our sales team before contracting is required.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration eligibility for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm the exact scope of support and fees.
Confirm contract eligibility based on domestic (Korean) business status
The integration method and priorities differ depending on your online sales channel mix—own store, open marketplace, mobile app, etc.
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your business falls under a restricted category per WeChat Pay's merchant policy
Confirmation is needed on compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Regardless of the customer's yuan-denominated payment, WeChat Pay transactions are received on the merchant side in euros (EUR), then converted by Hecto Financial and settled domestically in whichever currency—USD, KRW, or JPY—was set under the contract. Refunds are processed in-app against the original transaction, and if your sales mix includes EU consumers, it is safer to also establish separate handling for the 14-day right of withdrawal.
The Hecto Financial team will help you review the right combination of payment methods for the Spanish market.
