Samsung Pay is Samsung Electronics' payment wallet for Galaxy smartphone and watch users, and Spain is one of the markets where it operates in Europe. We outline the adoption criteria, including that in Europe it works through in-app and web checkout screens based on tokenization of registered cards.
Spain is a market where Samsung Pay began operating relatively early in Europe, with a strong base of Galaxy users given the high share of Android devices. Payments are based on tokenization of registered cards, and the European service operates as an online method that calls up the tokenized card within in-app and web checkout screens. By nature, it doesn't replace card payments but rather adds a familiar wallet experience for Galaxy users.
It suits mass-market commerce with a high share of Galaxy device users, and merchants who want to round out their wallet lineup alongside Google Pay and Apple Pay to minimize mobile payment drop-off, as a complementary method. Since wallets ultimately operate on top of card coverage, the natural order is to first finalize your card acceptance terms and then add this on top.
When a consumer approves a payment with a card registered in Samsung Pay, a token is transmitted instead of the actual card number, and biometric authentication such as a fingerprint serves as the PSD2 Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) element. The authorized amount, just as with card transactions, is collected by Hecto Financial in euros (EUR), converted, and then settled to the merchant in Korea.
When integrating through Hecto Financial, Samsung Pay is reviewed by checking whether it can be activated on top of your card payment infrastructure. Contract eligibility for Korean businesses and terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options) vary by industry and transaction volume, so advance consultation is required.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration eligibility for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm the exact scope of support and fees.
Confirm contract eligibility based on domestic (Korean) business status
The integration method and priorities differ depending on your online sales channel mix—own store, open marketplace, mobile app, etc.
Advance confirmation is needed on whether your business falls under a restricted category per Samsung Pay's merchant policy
Confirmation is needed on compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Samsung Pay payment proceeds are collected in euros (EUR), converted by Hecto Financial, and settled domestically in whichever currency—USD, KRW, or JPY—was chosen under the contract. Refunds are processed as a cancellation of the original card transaction, and refunds under Spanish consumers' 14-day right of withdrawal can be handled through the same route.
The Hecto Financial team will help you review the right combination of payment methods for the Spanish market.
