WeChat Pay is a payment function built into Tencent's WeChat messenger, and it is a cross-border tool for mainland Chinese customers rather than local Belgian residents. We outline the adoption requirements and settlement structure from the perspective of merchants looking to connect WeChat channel marketing with payments.
WeChat Pay is a payment function embedded in Tencent's WeChat messenger and is one of the everyday payment methods used by mainland Chinese consumers. It is not a method used by local Belgian residents; instead, it targets Chinese tourists spending in Belgium and Europe, and mainland customers purchasing overseas goods through WeChat channels. It is typically introduced alongside Alipay to complete coverage for Greater China payments.
If you already operate customer touchpoints for Chinese customers through a WeChat official account or mini program, the practical benefit of adoption is that you can build a journey where everything from marketing to payment stays within WeChat. In tourism and retail, pairing it with Alipay to broaden Greater China coverage is close to the standard setup.
Payment is completed entirely within the WeChat app: the consumer scans a QR code or taps the pay button within an official account or mini program, then approves with a fingerprint or password. Even though the charge is displayed to the consumer in Chinese yuan, the merchant transaction is processed in euros (EUR), and Hecto Financial receives that amount. Under Chinese regulations, only WeChat Pay accounts verified with real-name identification can make overseas payments, which is a factor to account for when estimating conversion rates.
Integrating through Hecto Financial lets a Korean corporation consider accepting WeChat Pay without a separate local contract in Belgium. Because Chinese regulations require a prior review of eligible product categories, an advance check based on industry and product category is necessary, and the settlement cycle, fees, and currency options vary depending on contract terms.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that a specific merchant can actually integrate. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is possible based on a Korean business entity
The integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as your own store, open marketplaces, or mobile apps
You need to check in advance whether your category falls under an industry restricted by WeChat Pay's merchant policy
You need to confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Settlement of WeChat Pay transactions follows the same three-currency structure. Hecto Financial receives the euro (EUR) proceeds, converts the currency, and pays the Korean merchant in whichever contracted currency of USD, KRW, or JPY, on a cycle set by the contract terms. Refunds are returned to the consumer's WeChat account based on the original transaction, and documenting operating standards that distinguish between the 14-day withdrawal rule applicable to sales to EU consumers and your own refund policy for Chinese customers will shorten dispute resolution time.
The Hecto Financial team will help you review the right combination of payment methods for the Belgian market.
