This guide is for merchants in Korea looking to offer Apple Pay as a payment option in Japan, a market with an unusually high number of iPhone users. It covers the industries and customers it suits best, the tokenization-based payment flow, the settlement structure, and what to confirm in advance.
Japan's smartphone market has one of the highest iPhone shares in the world, at roughly half, giving Apple Pay an unusually broad base of potential users. In a market where the cashless ratio has reached around 40% amid this transition, Apple Pay lets consumers complete payment through Face ID or Touch ID authentication and tokenization technology without exposing their card number, which suits the security-conscious tendencies of Japanese consumers well.
For owned storefronts and D2C commerce that see a large share of traffic from mobile Safari, a single Apple Pay button can reduce checkout abandonment by cutting down on card entry and shipping-address input. The benefit tends to be greater for industries with frequent repeat purchases among Japanese consumers, such as fashion, beauty, and subscription services.
A consumer in Japan completes payment on an iPhone, Apple Watch, or in the Safari checkout screen with just Face ID or Touch ID authentication, and a tokenized device account number is transmitted in place of the actual card number, authorized in yen (JPY). Hecto Financial collects these funds in JPY, then converts and settles to the Korean merchant in USD, KRW, or JPY as chosen under the contract. In-app payment and web payment have different integration requirements, so the technical documentation should be checked.
Apple Pay can be explored for adoption on the basis of a Korea-based entity within the scope of Hecto Financial's payment gateway integration. Because the applicable channels (web, in-app), the range of supported card networks, and fee and settlement terms vary by merchant environment, we recommend confirming these in advance.
※ This section describes a general integration procedure and does not guarantee actual integration eligibility for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm exact coverage and fees.
Confirm contract eligibility as a merchant registered in Korea
The integration approach differs depending on whether you are online-only or also include physical stores in Japan
Confirm in advance whether your products fall under categories restricted by the Apple Pay operator's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with Japan's payment and foreign-exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Apple Pay payment proceeds are authorized in yen through the card the consumer has registered, and Hecto Financial collects them in JPY. Settlement to the Korean merchant proceeds after currency conversion in USD, KRW, or JPY as chosen under the contract, with the cycle and fee rate set by the contract terms. Refunds are processed as a cancellation back to the original payment card, governed jointly by the card issuer's and Hecto Financial's policies, so please confirm the processing deadline in advance.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to find the right combination of payment methods for the Japanese market.
