This page is for merchants in Korea looking to accept Alipay payments from Greater China customers in Japan. It covers the nature of demand from Chinese travelers to and residents of Japan, the cross-border integration and settlement structure, and what to check before adoption.
Chinese visitors make up one of the largest shares of foreign travelers to Japan, and online spending by the Chinese community residing in Japan is also substantial. Alipay is one of the world's largest mobile payment platforms, operated by Ant Group, and payments in Japan mostly occur when these Chinese customers use the same wallet they use at home. With Japanese e-commerce growing to roughly 20 trillion yen a year, Alipay is a meaningful cross-border complement for merchants seeking to also capture Greater China customers.
If Japanese customers are your primary focus, local methods such as PayPay should take priority, while Alipay is most effective for product categories that overlap with demand from Chinese tourists visiting Japan, such as duty-free goods, souvenirs, and beauty products, or for commerce targeting Chinese residents in Japan. We recommend checking the share of Greater China customers in your own order data before setting your adoption priority.
When a consumer selects Alipay at online checkout, they are taken to an app-launch or QR-scan screen and authorize payment with a password or biometric verification. The merchant-side transaction is processed on a yen (JPY) basis, and Hecto Financial collects it locally before converting and settling to the Korean merchant in USD, KRW, or JPY as chosen under the contract. Detailed integration specifications such as app redirection should be confirmed in the technical documentation.
For Alipay cross-border payments, a Korean corporate merchant can explore integration through Hecto Financial without going through procedures in China. Because cross-border programs may restrict certain product categories, please confirm coverage and fees through consultation.
※ This section describes a general integration procedure and does not guarantee actual integration eligibility for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm exact coverage and fees.
Confirm contract eligibility as a merchant registered in Korea
The integration approach differs depending on whether you are online-only or also include physical stores in Japan
Confirm in advance whether your products fall under categories restricted by the Alipay operator's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with Japan's payment and foreign-exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Even when a Japan-based customer pays with Alipay, the merchant's settlement currency is not renminbi. Hecto Financial collects the transaction proceeds in JPY, the reference currency for the Japanese market, then converts and settles to the Korean merchant in USD, KRW, or JPY as chosen under the contract. The settlement cycle and fee rate follow the contract terms, and since refunds are governed jointly by Alipay's cross-border refund rules and Hecto Financial's operating policy, please confirm the processing deadline in advance.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to find the right combination of payment methods for the Japanese market.
