The messaging app WeChat is close to essential infrastructure for both Hong Kong's local users and the population that moves between Hong Kong and the mainland, and the payment feature built into it naturally flows into commerce. This guide sets out the criteria for deciding whether to accept WeChat Pay and the settlement structure for sales into Hong Kong.
In the Hong Kong payment market, WeChat Pay's strength lies in being built on a messaging app. Tencent's WeChat is widely used both by the population that travels between the mainland and Hong Kong and by local Hong Kong residents, and its payment feature is woven into the same screen as chat, official accounts, and mini programs. Hong Kong is served by its own HKD-based local wallet, WeChat Pay HK, while mainland users can pay at Hong Kong merchants through cross-border programs, meaning a single brand can target both local and mainland-visitor demand at once.
This is especially well suited to merchants who draw customers through Chinese-language social channels. Commerce that markets through WeChat official accounts and mini programs, or K-beauty and food sellers with a mix of mainland and Hong Kong customers, can reduce drop-off by connecting acquisition channels and payment methods within a single ecosystem.
The consumer completes payment entirely within the WeChat app. Offline and on the web, this means scanning a QR code; on mobile, it means opening the app via H5 or paying through a checkout window inside a mini program or official account, using wallet balance or a linked card. Hecto Financial receives the funds for Hong Kong merchant transactions in the local currency, HKD, and after currency conversion settles with the Korean merchant in USD, KRW, or JPY, whichever was chosen in the contract. Channel-specific requirements, such as whether mini program listing is needed, should be confirmed in the technical documentation before integration.
Through Hecto Financial's integration, a Korean corporation can consider accepting WeChat Pay without signing a direct merchant contract with Tencent. That said, accepting the local Hong Kong wallet (WeChat Pay HK) and accepting mainland users through cross-border programs can involve different programs and requirements, so please finalize the integration scope and terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options) that fit your target customers with the sales team before signing a contract.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration will be possible for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through a consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is available under a Korean business registration
The integration method differs depending on whether sales are online only or also include physical stores in Hong Kong
Check in advance whether your products fall under a restricted category under WeChat Pay's merchant policies
Confirm compliance with Hong Kong's payment and foreign exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Whether the customer uses WeChat Pay HK or the mainland cross-border version, funds paid to a Hong Kong merchant are pooled and received by Hecto Financial in HKD. After currency conversion, these are settled with the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was specified in the contract, with the settlement cycle and fee rate following the contract terms. Refunds flow back into the consumer's WeChat wallet, so both WeChat Pay's refund policy and Hecto Financial's operating policy apply together; please confirm the refund window for cross-border transactions before signing a contract.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the payment method mix best suited to the Hong Kong market.
